Los traders más novatos se pasan la vida buscando indicadores que les digan si el precio va a subir o bajar.
Pero ese es un approach súper naive al analisis técnico.
Hablemos de uno de mis indicadores favoritos, el Hurst Exponent.
Este indicador viene a decir algo mucho más valioso a nivel estructural. Te dice si estás operando sobre memoria, sobre ruido, o sobre una goma que va a volver a su sitio.
Es una especie de sensor de régimen.
Cuando operas mediante un algoritmo, estás asumiendo implícitamente una estructura en los datos.
Si tu estrategia es de trend-following, asumes que una subida tiene más probabilidad de ir seguida de otra subida.
Y, en cambio, si operas mean-reversion, asumes que tras el una subida viene la corrección.
Como ya sabemos, el mercado no es estático, sino que cambia de régimen, por lo que esta asunción puede ser un problema.
El Hurst Exponent (H) mide la velocidad a la que el rango de los precios crece a medida que alargas tu ventana de tiempo.
Se mide entre 0 y 1, y funciona como el semáforo del comportamiento estocástico.
H ≈ 0.5 (ruido)
Es una secuencia de precios aleatoria. Lo que pasó ayer no te da información sistemática sobre lo que pasará hoy. Si tu Hurst rodante está sobre el 0.5 puedes apagas los modelos direccionales. Operar momentum en un entorno así es regalar spread.
H > 0.5 (memoria)
La serie es persistente. El movimiento tiene inercia real (más allá del azar). Las subidas se agrupan con subidas y las caídas con caídas. Este es el único ecosistema donde los sistemas de momentum tienen un soporte real para funcionar.
H < 0.5 (elástico)
La serie es anti-persistente. Lucha consigo misma. Un tramo agresivo en una dirección eleva estadísticamente la probabilidad de la reversión. Es el terreno natural para estrategias de mean-reversion y provisión de liquidez en rangos.
Evidentemente, no tiene sentido usar un Hurst sobre todo el histórico de la serie. La utilidad del indicador aparece cuando lo mides en rolling windows.
Si tu fondo tiene un sistema de momentum puro y el Hurst del activo cae de 0.75 a 0.48 durante un tiempo, básicamente te está avisando de que el escenario ha cambiado.
