Rise and Shine! Back once again for Trait Tuesdays. This week, @dcntrlyzr looks into: Genuine Undead: The “AVIATOR SHADES” trait files “Aviator shades” are iconic sunglasses with a teardrop-shaped lens, originally designed for pilots in the 1930s. Ray-Ban popularized them with the 1937 model for U.S. Army Air Corps, balancing style and function—large lenses for glare protection and a lightweight metal frame. They became a cultural staple through military use, Hollywood (think Top Gun), and fashion. Their timeless appeal lies in versatility, suiting most face shapes, and a rugged, rebellious vibe. Let’s dive deeper into the origins of aviator sunglasses, exploring their development, technical innovations, and the broader context that shaped their creation. PRE-AVIATOR CONTEXT: THE NEED FOR PILOT EYE PROTECTION In the early 20th century, aviation was rapidly advancing, but pilots faced significant challenges. Open-cockpit planes exposed them to harsh environmental conditions—wind, dust, and intense sunlight, especially at higher altitudes where UV radiation was stronger. By the 1920s, as aircraft climbed higher and faster, glare became a critical issue. Pilots reported headaches, eye fatigue, and even temporary blindness from unfiltered sunlight, which posed serious safety risks. Standard goggles, used since World War I, were cumbersome, often fogged up, and didn’t adequately block glare. These limitations drove the push for a better solution. THE CATALYST: JOHN MACCREADY’S VISION The story of aviators begins with Lieutenant General John A. MacCready, a U.S. Army Air Corps balloonist. In 1929, during a high-altitude balloon flight, MacCready experienced severe eye strain from glare, prompting him to seek a practical alternative to goggles. He contacted Bausch & Lomb, a Rochester, New York-based company known for precision optics (e.g., camera lenses and microscopes), to develop sunglasses that could protect pilots’ eyes while being lightweight, durable, and non-obstructive to vision. MacCready’s request was specific: the lenses needed to cover the entire visual field, reduce glare, and maintain clarity for reading instruments. BAUSCH & LOMB’S INNOVATION: THE FIRST AVIATORS Bausch & Lomb’s optical experts, led by their research team, began experimenting in the early 1930s. They focused on two key elements: LENS DESIGN: The teardrop shape was inspired by the natural curvature of the human eye’s field of vision. This maximized coverage, protecting not just from direct sunlight but also peripheral light, which was critical at high altitudes where UV rays were more intense. The lenses were made from green-tinted “Kalichrome” glass (later called G-15), which filtered out blue and ultraviolet light while preserving color accuracy—a crucial feature for pilots needing to distinguish terrain or read cockpit gauges. FRAME DESIGN: The frame was crafted from lightweight gold-plated metal (often brass or nickel alloy) to ensure comfort during long missions. The double-bridge structure and adjustable nose pads provided stability and fit for various face shapes. The iconic “bayonet” temples curved to hook around the ears, keeping the glasses secure during turbulent flights. In 1936, Bausch & Lomb patented the design under the name “Anti-Glare.” The following year, they refined the prototype, incorporating feedback from military pilots, and branded it as the Ray-Ban Aviator. The name “Ray-Ban” was coined to reflect the glasses’ ability to “ban” harmful rays. The first model, released to the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1937, was designated for military use but was made available to the public in 1938, retailing for about USD 3.25 (roughly USD 70 today). MILITARY ADOPTION AND WORLD WAR II The Aviator’s military adoption was a turning point. During World War II, the U.S. Army Air Forces standardized them for pilots, recognizing their superior protection against glare and UV exposure at altitudes exceeding 30,000 feet. General Douglas MacArthur famously wore them during Pacific campaigns, and photos of him sporting aviators in the Philippines became iconic, embedding the sunglasses in popular culture. The military also contracted other manufacturers, like American Optical, to produce aviator-style glasses to meet wartime demand. These models often used similar teardrop lenses but varied slightly in frame materials or lens tints. TECHNICAL MILESTONES LENS TECHNOLOGY: Early aviators used mineral glass lenses, which were scratch-resistant but heavy. By the 1950s, Bausch & Lomb introduced polarized lenses, which further reduced glare by filtering reflected light—a boon for pilots and later drivers. The G-15 lens, a gray-green tint, became the standard for its neutral colour balance (transmitting 15% of visible light). FRAME DURABILITY: The original gold-plated frames were corrosion-resistant, vital for humid or salty conditions in cockpits. Later models experimented with materials like stainless steel and, in the 1980s, lightweight plastics for civilian markets. OPTICAL PRECISION: Bausch & Lomb’s expertise in ophthalmology ensured the lenses were distortion-free, a critical feature for pilots needing precise vision. This set aviators apart from fashion-driven sunglasses of the era. BEYOND THE MILITARY: EARLY CULTURAL IMPACT While designed for function, aviators quickly transcended their military origins. After their 1938 public release, they appealed to outdoorsmen, fishermen, and drivers for their practicality. By the 1940s, Hollywood began to notice. Actors like Gary Cooper and later Marlon Brando wore them, projecting a rugged, masculine image. The sunglasses’ association with heroic pilots gave them a romanticized allure, paving the way for their status as a fashion staple in the 1950s and beyond. COMPETITORS AND VARIATIONS While Ray-Ban dominated, other companies entered the fray. American Optical, a key supplier during WWII, produced aviators for the military and later civilians, emphasizing durability. In the 1970s, Randolph Engineering began supplying aviators to the U.S. military, offering models like the HGU-4/P with bayonet or skull temples. These brands maintained the teardrop design but introduced variations, such as mirrored lenses or different frame finishes (e.g., matte black or chrome). LESSER-KNOWN FACTS: CULTURAL PREDECESSORS: While aviators were groundbreaking, earlier protective eyewear—like tinted “smoked” glasses used by 19th-century sharpshooters—influenced their concept of glare reduction. PRE-AVIATOR PRECURSORS EXISTED IN CYCLING: Before aviators were developed for pilots, shield-like eyewear was used as early as the mid-19th century by cyclists to protect against dust and wind. These early designs, though not teardrop-shaped, influenced the concept of protective eyewear for high-speed activities, laying groundwork for the aviator’s development. AMERICAN OPTICAL’S D-1 PREDATES RAY-BAN’S DESIGN: Contrary to popular belief that Ray-Ban pioneered aviators, American Optical’s U.S. Army Air Corps D-1 sunglasses, introduced in 1935, were the first true aviator sunglasses. Featuring a teardrop lens and metal frame, they were standardized on August 13, 1935, two years before Ray-Ban’s public release. ORIGINAL LENSES WERE INADEQUATE: The first D-1 sunglasses by American Optical used green-tinted lenses that transmitted 50% of visible light (Type 1), which proved insufficient for high-altitude glare. By 1941, the AN6531 model introduced a darker “rose smoke” lens to better protect pilots’ eyes, a critical upgrade for military use. NICKEL-PLATED FRAMES FOR COMPASS SAFETY: The AN6531 frames were made from nickel-plated copper alloy to avoid interfering with cockpit compasses, a detail often overlooked. This material choice was critical for navigation accuracy in early aircraft, reflecting the sunglasses’ integration into flight safety. GRADIENT LENSES WERE A WARTIME INNOVATION: During WWII, Bausch & Lomb introduced gradient mirror lenses for aviators, with a coated upper portion for glare protection and an uncoated lower portion for clear instrument reading. This innovation, developed around 1944, balanced functionality for pilots glancing at their dashboards. AMELIA EARHART IN EARLY MARKETING: Bausch & Lomb used the image of pioneering pilot Amelia Earhart in some of their early Ray-Ban advertising campaigns post-1937 to appeal to women, tying the sunglasses to patriotism and adventure. This marketing move helped broaden the aviator’s appeal beyond male military users. MILITARY SURPLUS FUELED CIVILIAN ADOPTION: After WWII, “surplus” AN6531 aviators flooded the civilian market, making them widely available and affordable. This surplus, combined with their association with heroic figures like General Douglas MacArthur, sparked their popularity in the 1940s and 1950s, before Ray-Ban’s aggressive civilian marketing. SQUARE AVIATORS FOR NAVIGATORS: In the 1940s, a variant called “navigator glasses” or “square aviators” emerged with a flatter, squarish lens bottom to better suit co-pilots and navigators who frequently looked down at maps. This lesser-known adaptation shows how aviators were tailored for specific roles within aviation. The above research highlights the collaborative and iterative nature of aviator sunglasses’ development, challenging the Ray-Ban-centric narrative and showcasing their evolution from niche military gear to a cultural icon. I like using @backpack for negotiations. But I don't understand how a product can be so different on mobile, with all the improvements being implemented, and yet the same items that work on mobile don't work on the website.
