I’m sitting on the train, whizzing through the countryside, heading to Edinburgh once again for another Fringe. This will be my tenth Fringe - 7 as a tech in the 90s, one as a punter in the 00s and second year reviewing. There is something special about the start of every #edfringe . Artists from all over the world descend on Edinburgh filled with excitement, expectations and a desire to share their creativity. Get-ins will be…er got in. Note to self get AI to write this bit next time. And the nerves will be building for the first performance… so a little advice from an old, old hand. REVIEWERS Here’s the secret: we want you to be good. Just like your audiences will want you to be good. No reviewer worth their salt (not actually sure what salt is currently worth, google it!) goes into a show wanting to hate it. Don’t panic if midway through a show you spot a reviewer in the audience. Don’t get distracted if you see them scribbling furiously in their notebook. If I’m scribbling frantically it’s nearly always a great line or a thought I’m desperate to note down quickly before I forget it. If you are the type of performer who gets unnerved by reviews, don’t read them. One of the loveliest turns I ever worked with never read any reviews until the run had finished. She got great reviews all the way through but did not want to know. She wanted to present the show as she intended it. And lastly, if you do get a review that’s a bit iffy or even negative, decide if there’s anything you can take from it then shrug and move on. There is no one publication that is so dominant that it can make or break a show at the Fringe. Oh and NEVER pay for a review. Not “expenses”. Not a penny. Not one brass razoo. A paid for review is an advert so just buy an advert. YOURSELF The Fringe is such a unique experience- huge, exciting and sometimes a bit overwhelming. You’ll hear this again and again because it’s a truism: it’s a marathon not a sprint. If you are doing the whole shebang, you’ll probably be running on fumes, dust and Irn Bru 1901 by the end! Pace yourself. Alternately fuck it, just go for it. You can rest when you’re dead. Live your own Fringe. This is your journey. Don’t be thrown if other shows have queues round the block, it can happen. There are acts who have big marketing spend. They are others who have worked their arses off each years and built up a following. It’s just life. Do good shows and build up your own audience by word of mouth (and reviews if you can get them). And lastly, if your first show arrives and no one comes, please for the love of god don’t go on your socials and weep about it. The Crying Girl schtick has been done. Twice! I mean we could see if an ugly boy greetin’ into his phone will get as many celebrity endorsements but I digress. No one is entitled to an audience. Edinburgh is not a Field of Dreams - ‘build it and they will come’ doesn’t apply when there are 3000+ other shows out there competing for those audiences. It’ll hurt but go out and flyer, speak to your venue’s press team/person to see if they can give some advice and what you could do and remember the only way is up! From The Recs, I hope you have a fantastic Fringe 2024 - see you there! Steve Coats-Dennis Editor, The Recs

I love hearing about #EdFringe shows, and you're more than welcome to tell me about yours. I can't reply to every message, but I promise I do read them all - and I've often picked shows to review that I first learned of here. Just so you know, I mainly cover theatre.
