Today I have complete exactly one year since my flight landed in the US. Today, as a cardiology researcher, I present my first poster for my JACC published abstract at the Hebbel Research Day of UMN. My journey has been a rollercoaster. It all began in Egypt, where I grew up and completed my medical school. I'm a first-generation IMG and also the first graduate from my medical school in Egypt to pursue training in the US as an internal medicine resident. Coming from Egypt, I had to juggle work alongside my studies to save up for my USMLEs, while ensuring I performed exceptionally. My move to the US was driven by hope for new opportunities, and I'm incredibly grateful for the chance given to me by my lab mentor, Jop van Berlo, my cath lab mentor, my hospital mentor, and the University of Minnesota as a whole. I can't express enough how supportive this place and its people have been toward me and my ambitions with the mentorship that I needed as someone whose med school has none yet practicing medicine in the US to guide me. This past year has been a mix of highs and lows: financial struggles, feelings of loneliness, being far from family, and the challenges of living independently. However, I've also had wonderful experiences meeting new people, doing new winter activities, tring new food, immersing myself in different cultures, and gaining valuable clinical experience with both hospital medicine and structural heart patients. I love how I can blend my work in cardiology, bridging clinical research and basic science with my clinical practice. The dream of becoming an internal medicine resident and a future cardiologist feels incredibly close to my heart. I've learned so much, both personally and professionally, and I'm eager to provide care for patients here in the future, while pursuing my research interests at the University. #match2025 #medtwitter #IMG #medicine
