During the #WomanLifeFreedom movement - when so many protestors were also killed and thousands more executed - I was honoured to read out a collective message at the UK parliament collated from over 1,000 inside Iran about the wishes of the people. What’s changed since? 40,000+ slaughtered for protesting in January this year. Hence the resolve of the people on the ground - despite the utter nonsense spouted by so many so-called ‘influencers’ in the west - is more firm and persistent, more committed, with or without foreign intervention. In Congress, an Iranian American activist was arrested for speaking out against war. Another activist was arrested simply for trying to amplify her voice. I appreciate President Trump’s earnest efforts to seek a diplomatic solution to change the behavior of the Iranian terrorist regime. However, between their constant attacks on international shipping, the persistent attacks on our Middle Eastern allies and now a totally unacceptable response to America’s diplomatic proposal, it is in my view, time to consider changing course. Trump declared the Iran war ended May 1. Iran attacked three U.S. destroyers May 7. The War Powers Resolution of 1973 gives the President 60 days from notification to Congress to obtain authorisation or terminate the operation. Trump notified Congress on 2 March that Operation Epic Fury hostilities began 28 February. The 60-day clock ran out 1 May. The administration’s solution was a letter. Trump wrote House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate President pro tempore Chuck Grassley: “The hostilities that began on February 28, 2026, have terminated.” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had told senators on 23 April that the 7 April Pakistan-mediated ceasefire “pauses” the 60-day clock. Senator Susan Collins of Maine countered that “the 60-day deadline is not a suggestion, it is a requirement.” Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut: “There is no pause button in the Constitution, or the War Powers Act.” JD Vance called the War Powers Act “fundamentally a fake and unconstitutional law.” The May 1 letter went out anyway. On 5 May Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared at the White House: “Operation Epic Fury is concluded. We achieved the objectives of that operation.” He launched Project Freedom, a defensive escort for commercial vessels through Hormuz, with the rule of engagement: “no shooting unless we’re shot at first.” Hegseth confirmed only two commercial vessels had successfully transited under U.S. protection. The pre-war baseline was approximately 138 vessels per day. By Tuesday evening Trump paused Project Freedom on Truth Social, citing the request of Pakistan and other countries. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif then named Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as the actor who pressed the suspension. The defensive operation lasted under two days. Two days later, on 7 May, United States Central Command publicly confirmed Iranian forces attacked three U.S. destroyers transiting Hormuz with missiles, drones, and small boats: USS Truxtun, USS Rafael Peralta, and USS Mason. No U.S. assets were struck. CENTCOM responded with self-defense strikes on Iranian missile and drone launch sites, command and control locations, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance nodes near Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, Bandar Khamir, and Sirik. Trump arrives in Beijing 14 May with kinetic escalation options legally constrained by his own administration’s letter. The hostilities the President declared terminated on 1 May continue at sea. Iran knows. Xi knows. Do not trade the headline. Trade the verification. The war is not over because the Secretary of State said so. The war is over when Hormuz transits, war-risk premia, OFAC tempo, and bank lending normalise. The Beijing summit is not the trade. The constitutional gap after Beijing is the trade.
