Americans and the West underestimate how deeply the regime and their 10 percent base cling to extremist ideology. They would rather go down with the ship in the name of Islam and loyalty to the Islamic Republic than save themselves or a nation of 90 million. You can’t negotiate with terrorists. Replacing one regime official with another is not “regime change”. Right now, the freedom loving Iranian people are America’s most reliable allies. Careful, targeted strikes can maintain that support. But mistakes as we have more recently seen, negligently killing civilians, or threats of hitting facilities vital to survival, could quickly turn public sentiment against outside intervention, a loss for everyone. The only realistic path forward is combining precise strikes with boots on the ground and actively involving Iranian opposition in strategy and negotiations. After the massacre of tens of thousands in January, the Iranian people have shown extraordinary courage, but they cannot safely rise up alone. Coordinated support is essential if they are to challenge the regime and reclaim their country. @POTUS
