I don’t share too much of this kind of thing here (people can be pretty cruel, y’know) but I’ve sat with it all day and it felt right to try. Loving an addict is complex. Having one as your parent, even more so. As most who’ve been in my shoes can attest, you don’t lose them all at once. Little by little, the cackling laughter, kitchen dance parties, and highway karaoke are overshadowed by endless arguments, pleas for change, and the eventual decision to sever the cord to protect what’s left of your sanity. The silence that follows is so loud, it says more than they ever could’ve to your face. Yet, when news of their death comes out of the blue on a random Monday afternoon, it still cuts you off at the knees and snatches the air right from your chest. A heartbreak so intense, it feels like you just might join them. Today marks 5 years since I lost my mom, and my warring emotions are just as volatile now as they were back then. I grieve the mom I caught glimpses of once upon a time, and the version of me who didn’t know the world I was growing up in wasn’t normal. I cry over the future that lies ahead without her, but also over the fact that the mom I’m grieving is one she’d never have been for me. One she never was. It’s a confusing dichotomy of loss and relief, an eternal argument of whether I’m missing her, or the mom I wished she could be. The sadness is there, but its very existence feels like a lie. Because how can you be sad over losing someone who causes you so much misery? Either way, deathaversaries suck and I’m glad to have this community to share it with. ❤️🫶🏻

🚨LONG, VULNERABILITY POST ALERT🚨 Some people will see this and assume it's just a chair, but to me, this is so much more. 🥹 Seven months ago, the back injury my abuser gave me flared up and left me unable to sit, stand, or walk. It took me over a month to relearn how to walk without the assistance of a walker or cane. Because of this, I was no longer able to work in my office. I've been working from bed (more recently from my couch) for seven months straight, and let me tell you something, that sh*t is depressing af. It's been such a struggle not only battling the constant, debilitating pain, but also keeping the depression at bay, all while trying to keep up with my clients' needs and write/edit my own books. After receiving his tax return and seeing how much of a toll this entire experience has taken on me, my incredible husband decided to use his hard-earned money to buy me a new recliner so I could once again work in an office setting. No one has ever done anything so selfless and kind and generous for me, and I am just in tears of endless gratitude. So, yeah. It's a chair. But to me, it's a lifeline. It's a place where I can work and create and feel like a productive member of society instead of a bed-ridden invalid. I'm so excited to get back to work in my office. Plus, would you get a load of those cupholders??? I mean, come on. This thing is awesome! 🙌🏻
