BREAKING Spain’s PM Sánchez: “They say that Spain is alone.” “They’re the same people who said that when we recognized the State of Palestine, and then others followed.” “We are not alone. We are the first.” “Those defending the indefensible will be the ones left alone.” 🇪🇸

As I step into a new chapter, I’m reflecting with gratitude and a sense of responsibility for what lies ahead. I am deeply honored to be stepping into the role of Special Assistant to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees at a moment that feels both critical and unprecedented for the international protection system. I am inspired by Dr @BarhamSalih’s visionary leadership, and privileged to support him at this pivotal time. I am also excited to work alongside UNHCR colleagues who do extraordinary work every day — many of whom I have worked with over the last decade and who have supported our movement. For me, this role is not just a professional step. It’s personal. As someone with lived experience of forced displacement, I see this as an opportunity to carry the perspectives, realities, and hopes of our communities into the spaces where decisions are made every day. None of this would be possible without @RefugeesSeat This opportunity represents so much of what we have worked toward as a movement: ensuring refugees are not only represented, but empowered to work, lead, and influence the issues that shape their lives. I co-founded R-SEAT with an idea, but what we built together became so much more than an organization. We built a family. We built a movement. We built partnerships, trust, and a shared belief that refugees don’t just belong on the agenda; they belong in the places where decisions are made, where policies are shaped, and where real change happens. To the R-SEAT team: you are my colleagues, my friends, and my chosen family. I learned so much from your passion, your courage, your integrity, and your commitment to this work. Thank you, and thank you to our partners for walking this journey with me and for believing in what we were building together. Over the years, many opportunities came, but I stayed because what we were creating at R-SEAT mattered. Leaving is not easy. In fact, it’s one of the hardest decisions I’ve made. R-SEAT will always be part of who I am. This is not a goodbye; it is a continuation of the mission, just from a different seat at the table. With deep gratitude for what has been, and hope for what lies ahead. @Refugees

Mark Carney’s speech at #Davos was powerful one of those moments where one feels genuinely proud to be Canadian. It was bold, clear eyed, and unapologetic; a speech that didn’t hide behind comfort or nostalgia, but instead called things exactly as they are. That kind of honesty, especially on a global stage, is strength. And it’s something we don’t show often enough. Having worked with many politicians and policymakers over the years, it has always pained me how slow and reluctant #Canada can be. We’re respected as polite, educated, reasonable but rarely as daring, decisive, or bold. Too often, that same caution shows up in our leadership. That’s why this speech matters. It felt like a shift in mindset. A reminder that we don’t have to choose between values and strength that we can be principled and powerful, cooperative and confident. I try to stay neutral and grounded in my advocacy work, and I’ll continue to do so. But no one including me can ignore or downplay a speech like this. Credit where it’s due. Huge kudos to PM Carney for delivering something this honest and this strong. I hope this way of thinking becomes part of a new Canadian future not just in Ottawa, but among the people. A Canada that earns respect for itself and its people not only for being kind and educated, but for being courageous, serious, and willing to lead. cbc.ca/news/politics/…

It’s sad that so many dictatorships today seem to fall only with the involvement of major powers. Still, my heart is with my many of my #Venezuelan friends today. After years of pain, seeing the dictator finally fall and be arrested along with his wife — brings real hope. I truly wish this moment leads to the future they’ve long dreamed of, where they can safely return, rebuild, and visit their country again. From #Syria with love!

R-SEAT: Refugees Seeking Equal Access at the Table@RefugeesSeat

R-SEAT congratulates Dr. Barham Salih (@BarhamSalih) on his election as the next United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. A former Kurdish refugee who later served as the President of Iraq, Dr. Salih brings a unique combination of political leadership and lived experience of forced displacement. We believe this perspective will be fundamental to UNHCR’s next chapter. R-SEAT advocates for meaningful refugee participation that goes beyond symbolism, ensuring refugees have tangible influence over policy priorities and outcomes, grounded in their lived experience of forced displacement and expertise. We have consistently called for leadership that reflects these principles, including the appointment of a High Commissioner with lived experience of forced displacement. Dr. Salih participated in R-Space event in Geneva this past October, alongside other candidates, where he shared his priorities and vision for the mandate, including a strong emphasis on protection and advancing durable solutions. His political experience and visionary leadership, combined with his personal understanding of displacement positions him well to lead UNHCR at a moment of profound challenge for the international refugee system. We see this appointment as an important step toward leadership that reflects lived experience, and we look forward to continuing our close collaboration with the new High Commissioner and UNHCR. 🎥Watch Dr. Salih’s remarks from the Geneva event here: youtube.com/watch?v=HV4a44…

I am honoured to have been elected as the incoming United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. As a former refugee, I know first-hand how protection and opportunity can change the course of a life. That experience will inform a leadership approach grounded in empathy, pragmatism, and a principled commitment to international law. My foremost responsibility will be to refugees and others forced to flee—upholding their rights and dignity and advancing durable solutions so that displacement remains a temporary situation, not a permanent fate. At a time of record displacement and severe pressure on humanitarian resources, delivering on UNHCR’s mandate requires a renewed focus on impact, accountability, and efficiency. This is a shared responsibility. UNHCR will build on the important reforms undertaken in recent years to strengthen operational effectiveness and value for money. I will work with Member States and partners across the public, private, and philanthropic sectors to mobilize the capacity, resources, and collective will needed to reach those most in need. I am grateful to the Secretary-General, António Guterres, and to the General Assembly for their confidence, and to High Commissioner Filippo Grandi for his principled and tireless leadership during a period of extraordinary global challenge. I look forward to working closely with UNHCR’s dedicated staff, states, partners, host communities, and, most importantly, refugees themselves to advance protection and durable solutions fit for both the promise and the perils of the 21st century.

Grateful that the House of Representatives passed the FULL repeal of the Caesar Act as part of the NDAA. I was grateful to introduce the House legislation for full repeal back in May and to lead efforts in the House for the past six months. Grateful for the support of President Trump, Ambassador Barrack and Senator Shaheen to make this a reality. Hopeful for Senate passage within days and then to President Trump’s desk for signature. Make Syria Great Again!
