A wildfire along Interstate 5 shut down a lane through the Grapevine and triggered evacuation warnings on Thursday morning.  Firefighters in Kern County are battling the Fort Fire, which began Wednesday evening around 11:30 p.m. By early Thursday morning, the California Highway Patrol closed one lane on I-5, and an evacuation advisory was issued. The fourth lane on the southbound side of the freeway is closed for several miles, said Kern County Fire Department spokesperson Andrew Freeborn. Evacuation warnings were issued for the Digier Canyon, a remote mountainous area with compact roads in Lebec.

Air quality is expected to be moderate-unhealthy for some today due to wildfire smoke mixing down to the surface underneath high pressure. Conditions won't improve until Thursday afternoon when scattered t-storms develop and their outflow helps to mix out some of the smoke. #pawx

HOLY SMOKES! Dense wildfire smoke has moved in overnight and it is creating a weird looking sky right now. It is hard to believe there are not any clouds in the sky. Thankfully the vast majority of this smoke is aloft and not at ground level. The current AQI is at 61 (moderate).

Did you know wildfire smoke has a higher concentration of toxins and is therefore considered worse for you than cigarette smoke? A storm currently dividing the two masses of smoke will create mixing in the atmosphere, improving air quality a bit over the coming days. @KPIXtv
