Rituals within Mayan society were central to maintaining harmony between humanity and the divine realms. Ceremonies often involved chanting, drumming, incense, offerings, sacred dances, fasting, and altered states of consciousness induced through meditation, bloodletting, or psychoactive substances. The Maya believed that rulers and priests acted as intermediaries between worlds, capable of communicating with gods and ancestral spirits. Blood was viewed as a sacred life force carrying spiritual power, and ritual bloodletting performed by elites was believed to nourish divine beings and sustain cosmic balance.
