The term "buy-in" is used widely in change but it is not helpful. When we ask "how do we get [add the name of a particular group] to buy-in to our proposed change?", it is too late. It creates risk in our ability to achieve outcomes. We don't need "buyers" who "buy-in" to change, we need "investors" who become owners of the change process from the beginning.

There are many "antipatterns" in common use in health & care. They are solutions or practices that create undesired outcomes. They're the opposite of good practice, which is solutions that have been proven to be effective. They're often used because they seem to work, but the larger context or long-term consequences haven't been considered. We should avoid anti-patterns. This article sets out three antipatterns for engineering leaders that are also relevant to health leaders:
1) Thinking that micromanagement is always bad
2) Getting caught up on finding the right measurement
3) Protecting my team from the reality & problems around them "so they can focus"

The first rule of being a change agent in an organisation is: "you can't be a change agent on your own". However creative, determined or passionate we are, the system will wear us down without social support. History shows that the people who make change happen are often small groups, loosely connected, united by shared purpose. It's why setting up a peer group of likeminded people can amplify our power for change. Here's some great practical advice on how to set up a peer group:
1) Find the right members
2) Set guidelines on how you'll connect
3) Agree on values
4) Check in to keep up the momentum

My mother, who is currently living with dementia, talks lots about parts of herself dying, and how people generally don’t appreciate how painful this feels. She feels this difficult part of dementia gets hidden and people don’t see the urgent need to act. #TheLongGoodBye
