Walks & hits per innings pitched (WHIP) measures the traffic pitchers put on the bases. A WHIP of 1.2 for a starting pitcher is good, anything below that is very good or even better. We know about the advantage to hitting the ball in the air and over the infield. Even super-hard hit grounders are most often easily scooped up by slick fielding infielders and turned into outs or even double plays. With outfielders now being positioned based on hitter tendencies, hitting the ball anywhere but over the fence is pretty risky! A short from our podcast this week. @SubwayToShea Good job calling out this play from Vientos. It was his finest defensive moment as a Met. If that ball gets by him, it's not an error & Yankees would have plated the go ahead run. Who knows what would have happened next? It's natural to think about Pete but props go to Swaggy V!
