The Opposition’s protest over the recent ₹60 LPG price revision is misplaced and ignores the larger global context.
At a time when the world is grappling with severe energy disruptions due to the West Asia conflict, India stands out for its stability, affordability, and forward planning in ensuring energy security for 1.4 billion citizens.
Let’s look at the facts:
• Even after the revision, LPG in India remains among the cheapest in the region:
– India (Delhi – Ujjwala): ₹613
– Pakistan: ₹1046
– Sri Lanka: ₹1345
– Nepal: ₹1207
• The ₹60 increase translates to:
– ~80 paise per family per day
– ~20 paise per person per day
This is hardly the “burden” it is being projected as.
Government has consistently shielded citizens:
• Oil Marketing Companies absorbed ~₹40,000 crore in losses in recent years to keep prices low.
• Government provided ₹30,000 crore compensation to ensure uninterrupted supply.
• Additional ₹22,000 crore support was extended earlier to protect consumers.
Despite global LPG benchmarks rising sharply, domestic prices were deliberately kept stable.
Global vs India reality:
While international LPG prices (Saudi CP) rose significantly over the years, India ensured that consumers were insulated.
In fact:
• International LPG prices rose ~41% (2023–2026)
• Effective domestic LPG prices for beneficiaries fell ~32%
Even today, consumers are paying far below market-linked prices.
Long-term consistency:
• LPG cylinder price in 2014: ~₹906
• LPG cylinder price in 2026: ~₹913
Minimal increase over 12 years despite global volatility.
At the same time:
• LPG coverage expanded from 55.9% to 100%+
• Beneficiaries increased from 14.5 crore to 33+ crore
• Infrastructure, pipelines, and import capacity more than doubled
India vs the World during the crisis:
While India ensures stable supply and affordability, countries across the world have taken drastic measures:
Asia:
• Sri Lanka – fuel rationing, weekly caps, public holidays
• Bangladesh – blackouts, shutdown of industries, fuel rationing
• Pakistan – 4-day work week, fuel cuts, school closures
• Myanmar – vehicle restrictions, fuel station shutdowns
Africa:
• Kenya – fuel rationing, export bans
• South Africa – controlled fuel allocation
Europe & Oceania:
• Slovakia & Slovenia – fuel quotas and rationing
• New Zealand – considering “car-less days”, releasing reserves
Reality check: India is not in crisis — it is managing the crisis.
• Fuel prices largely stable over the past 3–4 years
• Excise duty cuts by the Centre cushioned global shocks
• Diversified sourcing from 27 to 41 countries ensured supply security
Meanwhile, several Opposition-ruled states have increased VAT or imposed additional cesses, directly burdening citizens, even during a global crisis.
Conclusion:
The ₹60 LPG adjustment is part of a calibrated, responsible approach, balancing consumer protection, fiscal prudence, and uninterrupted supply.
Instead of amplifying fear, it’s time to acknowledge that India is among the few nations that has navigated a global energy crisis without rationing, blackouts, or panic measures, ensuring stability for every household.
