Some women might be understanding or pretend like they don’t care that you spend hours playing, but they do.

In the movie, Ryland Grace says at one point that Eridians never discovered relativity.
Later on, when Rocky gives him 120 tons of astrophage, the Eridian says it will make his trip home six years longer. The film frames it as a simple trade-off: less fuel means lower thrust, leading to a longer journey and more years away from home.
But in the novel, these two things are much more closely connected!
The Eridians didn't realize you can’t just keep accelerating forever. They had no idea that a ship’s speed is ultimately limited by the speed of light. They also didn't understand time dilation or length contraction, so when they planned the mission to Tau Ceti, they expected the journey to take much longer than it actually would.
For Grace, this had one very important consequence: the Eridians had loaded Blip-A with far more astrophage than the ship actually needed. That’s why, in the book, Rocky can give Grace tons and tons of fuel.
The movie simplifies this subplot, but it also adds a new layer to it. Rocky’s gift isn't just the result of an engineering mistake anymore. It becomes a sacrifice.
A sacrifice measured in years before Rocky can return home. Years before he can see Adrian again.
And later, Grace gets the chance to repay it.
