“You are paid to think” is a dismissive thing to say to a PhD student. Many PhD students are drowning in debt, have no fixed work hours, and carry their research home long after the workday should have ended. If they had skipped the PhD and taken a regular job, most of them would be earning far more than the stipend they are surviving on right now. And that is just the financial reality. Beyond the money, PhD students are navigating marriage pressures, family responsibilities, mental health struggles, and financial stress, all while being expected to produce original scholarship at the highest level. Reducing that entire experience to “you are paid to think” flattens a deeply human journey into a punchline. It ignores everything a PhD student carries that never shows up in a dissertation. Work-life balance is a necessity and not a luxury in a PhD program. Because the goal is not just to finish. It is to still know who you are when you do.

I don’t agree. A PhD student should not prioritize work-life balance. Getting to do a PhD is a privilege. You are paid to think. There is no pressure for you to be economically useful. It is a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of human knowledge and produce something ground breaking. And nothing great ever happens without complete devotion. Look at everything that moved and shaped the world. Every single person who created anything meaningful, in science, in arts, in music, in movies, devoted their lives to their craft. Extraordinary outcomes require extraordinary inputs and some degree of sacrifice. Sure, have work-life balance during your PhD. But be content a mediocre outcome.
