من خلال التجارب البحثية والتطبيقية التي أجراها فريق تصميم أفنية في استكشاف العلاقة بين الخط الكوفي المربع والبنية المعمارية، برز مسجد المشراق كنموذج متقدم لإعادة تفعيل الخط العربي بوصفه نظامًا توليديًا قادرًا على تشكيل الفضاء، وليس مجرد عنصر زخرفي مضاف. وقد تم التعامل مع الخط الكوفي المربع كمنظومة هندسية شبكية تقوم على التكرار والامتداد والانقطاع المنضبط، بما يتيح دمجه ضمن التكوين المعماري على مستويات متعددة. انطلاقًا من ذلك، طوّر الفريق مفردات معمارية مستمدة من بنية الخط، حيث أعيدت صياغة المداخل كعتبات رمزية تترجم الإيقاع الخطي إلى حركة فراغية. كما صُممت المسكات النحاسية للأبواب بتجريدات خطية دقيقة، نُفذت بالتعاون مع خطاط محلي ومصنع متخصص، بما يوازن بين التعبير الخطي ومتطلبات التصنيع المعاصر. وفي الفضاء الداخلي، شكّلت المشربيات الفاصلة بين قاعة الصلاة وقاعة النساء عنصرًا أساسيًا، حيث حُوّل الخط الكوفي إلى نظام ترشيح بصري ينظم العلاقة بين الشفافية والخصوصية عبر تدرجات الكثافة والفراغ، مع تحسين الإضاءة الطبيعية والتهوية. كما طُوّرت منظومة كتابية لأسماء الله الحسنى ضمن تكوينات معمارية معاصرة تتكامل مع السطوح، وتعيد تعريف العلاقة بين النص والحيّز، بحيث يصبح الخط جزءًا من التجربة الإدراكية لا عنصرًا منفصلًا. تعكس تجربة مسجد المشراق محطة نوعية في مسار أفنية، إذ تُحوّل الخط العربي وخاصة الكوفي المربع من نظام ثنائي الأبعاد إلى أداة معمارية توليدية ثلاثية الأبعاد قادرة على تشكيل الفضاء وبناء علاقات بين الكتلة والفراغ، والضوء والظل، والوظيفة والرمزية، ضمن مقاربة معاصرة لإعادة توظيف التراث في العمارة الحديثة. Through the research and applied experiments conducted by the Afniah design team in exploring the relationship between square Kufic calligraphy and architectural structure, Al Mishraq Mosque emerges as an advanced model for reactivating Arabic calligraphy as a generative system capable of shaping space, rather than a mere decorative element. The square Kufic script is treated as a grid-based architectural system defined by repetition, extension, and controlled interruption, enabling its integration into architectural composition across multiple levels. Building on this, the team developed architectural elements derived from the structure of the script, where entrances were reinterpreted as symbolic thresholds that translate linear rhythm into spatial movement. Brass door handles were also designed through precise linear abstraction, executed in collaboration with a local calligrapher and a specialized fabrication workshop, balancing calligraphic expression with contemporary manufacturing requirements. In the interior space, the mashrabiyas separating the main prayer hall and the women’s hall became a key element, where the Kufic script was transformed into a visual filtering system that regulates the relationship between transparency and privacy through graded variations of density and void, while enhancing natural lighting and ventilation. Additionally, a calligraphic composition of the Names of Allah was developed within contemporary architectural formations integrated with surfaces, redefining the relationship between text and space so that calligraphy becomes part of the perceptual experience rather than a separate element. The Al Mishraq Mosque represents a significant milestone in the Afniah practice, transforming Arabic calligraphy particularly square Kufic from a two-dimensional system into a three-dimensional generative architectural tool capable of shaping space and establishing relationships between mass and void, light and shadow, function and symbolism, within a contemporary approach that repositions heritage in modern architecture.
