Outsiders simply need to learn what 'Chancery' is. This is like getting rid of all the legal terms under New Labour, and it turns out to be *more alienating* because most people pick up their background knowledge from American legal drama, which still uses them.

I'm told people who are at least 1/4 Jewish will automatically fall under the remit of the new Protection Squadron.

Based on the results from April, our long-range sanctions have reached a new level across three components: reducing Russia’s oil revenues, as well as the range and intensity of sanctions. It is important that not only is the target itself reached, as defined by the operational objective, but that the downtime of the target is increased or, at the very least, its operations are significantly reduced. According to the most conservative estimates, since the beginning of the year, the aggressor state has lost at least $7 billion solely as a direct result of our precise sanctions against Russia’s oil industry and refining sector – due to direct hits, downtime, and delays in shipments. I am grateful to all our warriors of the Defense Forces of Ukraine who, together with the Security Service of Ukraine and our intelligence agencies, are delivering these results. We will scale up our long-range systems capabilities. Decisions are being prepared. Glory to Ukraine!

@AlsoKnowne @whippletom I guess some cash ISA providers, non-traditional ones that offer "tie up your money" deals, can invest the money in a wider range of assets than just retail banking?

Stupid question: what happens to the money that goes into the cash isa? I always assumed the bank then reinvested it in stocks and shares - and the cash isa rate was set below the exepcted returns as a reflection of their margin for the volatility risk. Obvs I'm wrong though.

@FurtherOr @AlsoKnowne @whippletom The majority of retail banking loans are for mortgages (like 85%); another 10% on personal credit like credit cards and car loans; and the tiny remainder goes on business loans. It’s really hard to get a business loan - most company owners have to remortgage their homes.

@whippletom yup. principle the same. Though I do wonder whether this effectively means demand for low-risk investment loans vs equity is too high (ie businesses are not being started, they just get cheap credit). Need some macro-economists to help me out.

@AlsoKnowne Ah I see. So, slightly similar principle - not economically useless. Presumably loans are then often used for starting businesses? It's just that the way people talk about it it's tantamount to putting cash under your mattress

Depletion of our missiles in the Iran war is an argument for rebuilding out miltary indistrial complex.

I have no patience for the argument that orthodoxy is some revolutionary stream of Judaism. The continuity is clear, and any and all attempts to re-frame it otherwise are agenda driven by those who wish to drag orthodoxy to their own level

@AnshelPfeffer My hebrew isn't great, I grant, but I understood your tweet just fine, albeit slightly differently from how you intended. Either way, Judaism isn't a religion that can be redefined at will, while Orthodoxy defined as a reactionary stream of Judaism has been greatly exaggerated.
