Think this a great idea - pick an appropriate source for your culture/religion: "Do not rebuke a scoffer, for he will hate you; Reprove a wise man, and he will love you" Or "Never argue on the internet, never argue on the internet, never argue on the internet"

I am a hobbit at heart but England's glory and prosperity and cultural vigour has largely been made by men who looked outwards, upwards, beyond. Individuals who were not content to admire comely maidens on village greens and gossip about the local pig problems.

We have political and structural problems which require political and structural solutions. Becoming glorified living history re-enactors in a few pleasant rural enclaves while the country is utterly transformed around us is a recipe for failure and decay.
Both sides of the Tweed@Dr_W_E_Bulmer

This is how England should rebuild its sense of self: not by being seduced by the parties of the far-right, with their bait-n-switch oligarchic agenda, not by leaving ECHR, not even by yearning for hereditary peers, but simply by upholding its own traditions and folk-culture.

Cafés should sell half a pastry for like 5p more than half the price of the whole pastry. Easy profits, if you’re going to make such absolutely enormous pastries!

Trickle-down theory where anti-Israeli comments made over risotto somehow end up inflaming Syrian/Somalian schizo-Islamists

@IGMansfield @yuanyi_z some of the skills of being a historian (eg source analysis), whilst not part of "Our Island Story", are quite useful for life!

Approximately 90% of the debates about the history curriculum come down to the fact that some of us (inc. me) staunchly agree with @yuanyi_z's comment below, while others, equally wholeheartedly, reject it.

@david_lisovtsev @ShaiCorfas Forget the missile force, I think the IAF needs to purchase some more reusuable suicide drones (with an onboard remote controller and some mini-drones under the wings)

@FurtherOr @whippletom almost by definition I guess, that's why they can offer higher returns. But don't think it's going as far as equities - too risky

@AlsoKnowne @whippletom I guess some cash ISA providers, non-traditional ones that offer "tie up your money" deals, can invest the money in a wider range of assets than just retail banking?

@lukas_ohl @FurtherOr @whippletom but ultimately in that last case the money is going to business, just roundabout and also secured against housing

@FurtherOr @AlsoKnowne @whippletom The majority of retail banking loans are for mortgages (like 85%); another 10% on personal credit like credit cards and car loans; and the tiny remainder goes on business loans. It’s really hard to get a business loan - most company owners have to remortgage their homes.

@whippletom yup. principle the same. Though I do wonder whether this effectively means demand for low-risk investment loans vs equity is too high (ie businesses are not being started, they just get cheap credit). Need some macro-economists to help me out.

@AlsoKnowne Ah I see. So, slightly similar principle - not economically useless. Presumably loans are then often used for starting businesses? It's just that the way people talk about it it's tantamount to putting cash under your mattress

@DastDn right - if Iran drained stockpiles so much, there was never any hope against China (10x Iran) anyway

Depletion of our missiles in the Iran war is an argument for rebuilding out miltary indistrial complex. It's not an argument that the war left us vulnerable to China. The entirety of ordinance used against Iran would have been expended in the first 12 hours of a war with China

I have no patience for the argument that orthodoxy is some revolutionary stream of Judaism. The continuity is clear, and any and all attempts to re-frame it otherwise are agenda driven by those who wish to drag orthodoxy to their own level
Boruch Epstein@spacelaserzio

@AnshelPfeffer My hebrew isn't great, I grant, but I understood your tweet just fine, albeit slightly differently from how you intended. Either way, Judaism isn't a religion that can be redefined at will, while Orthodoxy defined as a reactionary stream of Judaism has been greatly exaggerated.

As many times as I’ve had this explained to me I cannot for the life of me understand why I’m supposed to be offended by a Jewish character named “Anthony Goldstein”
i tried ⋆ 🇻🇦@Shpow

@jk_rowling @zarahsultana I’m not surprised the illiterate and hateful JK Rowling who called a hypothetical Jewish character “Goldstein” doesn’t understand what globalise the intifada is. You hateful wretch, I regret the sixty or so hours I spent reading your books as a child.
