@NCTQ Absolutely! And the current system isn't working well for anyone - teachers feel stressed trying to find a sub to cover leaves and subs feel unsupported as they step in. It also reinforces systemic inequality because it relies on existing networks and relationships.

School district policies regarding family leave and substitute teachers are such an important, but often overlooked aspect of teacher support and retention.

@NCTQ A4: How are you supporting teachers as they become parents? Is it on the teacher to find their sub? Do you pay for long-term subs to do shadow days and joint planning with the permanent teacher? #HireGreatTeachers

Q7: Typically, the hiring season for teachers runs from March through June. How does the hiring timeline and process impact a school or district’s ability to make sure classrooms are fully staffed with great teachers from day 1? #HireGreatTeachers

@CEDR_US In California we estimate that a university student would pay approx $350 out of pocket to become a sub! The processing fee ($100 of that $350) is waived this year, but slated to return.

One quick and seemingly (to me) sensible low-cost change would be to grant student teachers a license to serve as substitutes. Did you know that you have to pay to get a substitute license? + the obvious answer is up substitute pay (as many have done). #HireGreatTeachers

Q6: Schools will likely continue to rely heavily on substitute teachers into the 2022-23 school year. What should state and district leaders be doing now to attract a stronger pool of subs? #HireGreatTeachers

@ERStrategies @NCTQ Yes! Especially true for folks with a less linear path, coming to teaching later in life. And many of them are checking out teaching through substitute teaching, a great recruitment pool for alternative pathways.

@NCTQ Q2: This fall we anticipate an increased reliance on long-term subs - an acceleration of a pre-pandemic trend. Invest in their PD and ongoing support to keep these essential educators on the job.

@NCTQ For folks who aren't entering teaching directly from college - like the people checking out teaching through substitute teaching - the idea of taking on additional student loans to get a credential is a major barrier.

Why does the California emergency substitute teacher permit cost $100? Do we need one at all? Many states have no state permit. Others have a free permit. In California most substitute teachers have to pay out of pocket $100 EVERY YEAR for a permit.
