@DanielBShapiro You cannot understand Israeli politics without understanding the unholy alliance between Bibi, Ben Gvir and Smotdich or “BBS” - this is just another ugly but not surprising product of BBS.

Watching Ben Gvir cheer passage of this law, which applies the death penalty to Palestinian terrorists but not Jewish ones, is dispiriting. Expect the High Court to strike it down. Meaning, Israel will take the blow to its reputation for this cost of a gross Ben Gvir election ad.
Ynet Global@ynetnews

Knesset approves death penalty for terrorists with Netanyahu backing Parliament passes measure by 62-48 vote after push by Ben-Gvir, despite opposition warnings that the law could trigger legal challenges and international fallout ynetnews.com/article/rjrssh…

@RpsAgainstTrump Marco is too smart not to the know the difference between aiding Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s war of aggression and conquest and Israel and Trump’s war of choice against Iran.

@EricDKoch @AJentleson Highly deceptive, out of context tweet as this poll is a clear outlier. Every other poll has Flanagan considerably up, mostly in double digits. See @nytimes And it’s no surprise since the Lt Gov has remained forceful against gross federal overreach and Craig not so much.

To my friends in #NJ11, here’s why I’m supporting my good friend Tom @Malinowski. I hope you’ll vote for him in the upcoming primary. He will serve New Jersey well as he returns to Congress!

@shaunmmaguire @ch402 state-sponsored violence under international norms are treated far differently than criminal activity of individuals in society. The ICCPR is a restraint on state power. As for Iran, it’s a grotesque atrocity but as an American, I care far more more about what’s happening here

@ch402 Hey Chris, I'm curious: This meets your threshold but what about the tens of thousands slaughtered in Iran over the last month? What about the murder of Iryna Zarutska? Or the murder of Laken Riley? What is your criteria for commenting vs not?

I try to not talk about politics. I generally believe the best way I can serve the world is as a non-partisan expert, and my genuine beliefs are quite moderate. So the bar is very high for me to comment. But recent events – a federal agent killing an ICU nurse for seemingly no reason and with no provocation – shock the conscience. My deep loyalty is to the principles of classical liberal democracy: freedom of speech, the rule of law, the dignity of the human person. I immigrated to the United States – and eventually cofounded Anthropic here – believing it was a pillar of these principles. I feel very sad today.

we spend billions on projecting America power in all kinds of ways - e.g., ambassadorial residents / state dinners / Air Force 1. And we are too cheap to provide one of the 2 Art 2 Constitutuonal Offices with their own bathroom? Seems counterintuitive.
Dan Pfeiffer@danpfeiffer

I know it seems dumb, but it does suck that the VP has to use the bathroom in the hallway where large groups of staff gather for their next meeting. It makes for all kinds of awkward encounters.

@AmbHarper That’s the difference. I seek to understand it so I can criticize it and alert those impacted to how they need to understand it. You can’t counter what you don’t understand.

Read The Art of the Deal. Trump is using his standard playbook on Greenland. 1. Aim high — anchor the negotiation. “I want to buy Greenland,” not “let’s cooperate in the Arctic.” 2. Create leverage — make yourself indispensable. Arctic shipping. Rare earths. Missile defense. Space & undersea cables. From “we’d like access” to “we’ll pay, but we want control.” 3. Control psychology — force the other side to react. Everyone calls it absurd. Create chaos and fear. Now move to negotiate on better terms. 4. Walk away — power comes from not needing the deal. Open questions: 1. Will a deal actually get done? 2. How much lasting damage was done to NATO and trust among allies? 3. Could Trump have secured the same or even better terms without all of this friction? 4. Do his negotiating opponents understand the playbook and how to defeat it?

@mdubowitz Fair enough. I guess where I differ is that I don’t buy the idea that I need to understand Trump’s rationale / approach, to know that it is simply and clearly insane to take actions which threatens close allies + potentially destroy the most successful alliance in human history.

The courage demonstrated by Iranian women and men protesting this brutal regime in the face of deadly crackdown - 3000 dead and counting - is extraordinary. Knock on wood but this time feels different. #IranProtests

This is precisely wrong on at least three levels. First, the thug cop was not in a life or death situation. Second, in a civilized society, there must be a check on the state’s use of force. Juries decide the line of what’s reasonable. To me, killer cop here was not reasonable.
Robert J. O'Neill@mchooyah

Let me give you some advice: If you've never been in a life and death situation where a major decision had to be made in the blink of an eye, it is not wise to judge the actions of those who have. You panic when it's your turn to order coffee...

@SteveSchmidtSES @ryandbusse Could not agree more. We need more candidates like this who fit their districts. Big tents obtain power. Restrictive, prescriptive, and narrow parties with a laundry list of litmus test are destined to polical minority status. It’s not that hard.

@mattyglesias There is of course evidence of an obsessive blame on Obama by the neo-Brandeis bunch, but that failure shouldn’t distract from the credible diagnosis re the vagaries of massive economic centralization and wealth inequality as well as the failure of the Chicago School framework

@WajahatAli This is a stupid tweet. If Buttigieg - an individual decides to run - you conclude something about the party? Holy non sequiter Batman. What does Pete’s decision to run or not to have anything to do with where the Dem Party is? Do better.

@mattyglesias Curating news would be useful. Curating by Bari Weiss with her highly partisan views n a number of issues would not be. It’s about whether the curator can be trusted. Is that hard to understand?
