#EUEnlargement is not a distant negotiation, it is a living process, with civil society and candidate countries shaping Europe’s future together. Honoured to welcome 🇦🇱 PM @ediramaal and the ambassadors of EU candidate countries at our final #EESCPlenary under my Presidency.

I had the pleasure of holding a long and constructive meeting in my office with His Excellency Vakhtang Makharoblishvili, the Ambassador of #Georgia to the European Union, on 03.09.2025, where we discussed a wide range of issues concerning the state of EU-Georgia relations. One important topic was the connectivity projects linking Asia and Europe through Georgia and Romania. There are already very promising initiatives to strengthen this strategic corridor, which will not only enhance trade and energy security but also bring the EU and Georgia closer together. Another topic I raised was the human rights situation in the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which have been illegally occupied by the Russian Federation since 2008. I was deeply concerned to learn about the ongoing human rights violations and the hardships faced by the local population, including restrictions on freedom of movement, cultural rights, and access to basic services. It is important to note that, since the illegal invasion of 2008, Georgia has had no direct diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation. I conveyed my warm regards to the people of Georgia and reassured Ambassador @AmbVatoM Makharoblishvili of my strong commitment to supporting Georgia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and its European path. The Georgian people have proven to be the most pro-European in the Caucasus region. Their unwavering commitment to the European path deserves recognition, openness, and firm support from all actors in the EU, regardless of their political affiliations. Georgia’s aspirations for deeper integration with the European family must be met with encouragement and concrete assistance. A stable, prosperous, and secure Georgia, more closely connected to the EU, is in the interest of both Georgia and the European Union. History has shown that the Georgian people are resilient, proud, and determined. If we remain united and stand stronger together, then no obstacle is insurmountable. The future of Georgia is European and together we can make this aspiration a reality. “If we stand together, we can move a mountain.” (Georgian proverb) @GeorgiaInEU
