@astrogrant Would have been cool to see that, but wasn’t JWST unfolding in complete darkness?

There is many-fold ROI / far greater historical legacy value / far greater public engagement when you strap a low-cost video camera to your thing doing cool things in space. I wish JWST had a GoPro on the end of the sunshade boom to show unfolding. Starliner should have camera.

I have been messing with #solareclipse pictures since about 10 minutes after it ended. I think I found the ultimate among my shots. This is the best edit I will ever get. So I submit my final eclipse product. You’ll never hear from me again on this. Probably. #eclipse2024

@cosmos4u I’ll do better for 2026: produce animated maps of shadows in terrain for low sun angle in Spain. Will do that later, it’s somewhat compute intensive. Meanwhile, my Atlas of Solar Eclipses has small scale maps of sun altitude at C1, greatest eclipse, and C4

@AmericanEclipse Phew ... the cosmic clockwork is still working. ;-) BTW, do you know - or make - maps visualizing the Sun's elevation at mid-totality (and max. partiality)? Those would come handy in general site selection esp. for TSE 2026 (pretty low in Spain) and TSE 2027 (super-high in Egypt)

@EmilyLCarney Not true. It is completely safe to take photos of the Sun with a modern smartphone. However, the smartphone image will not be very detailed not capture the crescent shape of the eclipse unless you have filters
