But without the ability to draw congressional districts solely on the basis of race and count illegal aliens in the census, the Democrat Party may be forced to win a House majority on the merits of their policies for a change.

Sen. Alex Padilla: Voter ID in California "could keep eligible people from voting. If you forgot your ID or you forgot to renew it the week before — now, all of a sudden, it’s expired, and you’re not allowed to vote. It’s a solution in search of a problem.”

Big news: New York’s governor just announced she’s working to change the redistricting process so the legislature can draw out Republicans. Repubs didn’t think we’d go there but they were wrong. More states must follow. BELT TO 🍑!!!!
Governor Kathy Hochul@GovKathyHochul

The Supreme Court has been chipping away at our elections for years. It is clearly carrying out Donald Trump’s will with this decision. New York has always led the fight for voting rights and we’ll lead again. I’m working with the Legislature to change New York’s redistricting process so we can fight back against Washington’s attempts to rig our democracy.

Republicans miscalculated their hand — badly. Leader Hakeem Jeffries just now: “We are not going to let the extremists successfully rig the midterm election…Democrats haven’t lost the gerrymandering battle; we’re winning it.”

@cwebbonline If all blue states remove all the legal hurdles & gerrymander TF out of their state's, we could end gerrymandering all together bc Republicans won't stand for it.

@RepHoulahan So was black representative McCormick representing her black constituents voices when she allegedly stole 5mill in FEMA funds? I seriously don’t think she was. A person gets one vote for the candidate of their choice in their district. They aren’t guaranteed they will get choice

The Voting Rights Act enshrines equal opportunities for underrepresented groups to ensure they have a voice in our democracy. This Court's appalling decision to gut the Voting Rights Act undermines the trailblazing and morally necessary work of the civil rights heroes who risked everything to guarantee equal representation for us all.

@dewforpolitics @RepCasar @USProgressives It’s unconstitutional to gerrymander based on skin color, right? What if this was an all white “district” that snaked across the state, would feel the same?

The Supreme Court's decision in favor of racist gerrymandering is an attack on American democracy itself. It is a betrayal of the Americans who fought and bled in the civil rights movement to establish basic rights for all people regardless of race. When Democrats retake power, we must pass legislation to restore the basic right to vote for all Americans. And Americans must look seriously at plans to rein in a corrupt, out of control Supreme Court.

Blue states must begin the work now, whether it’s repealing amendments or calling special sessions, to redraw their congressional maps for the national interest. We will win this; but it must happen with urgency.

The very foundation of the United States is our commitment to democracy. Today, the current Supreme Court majority voted against that, ultimately saying that some voters matter more than others. California will continue to fight for our democracy, for the American people, and the values of the Voting Rights Act.

The Supreme Court just advanced Donald Trump’s mission to gut voting rights and target Black voters across the country. Make no mistake: Georgia Republicans are plotting to rig the system, with Rick Jackson already calling for a special session to continue gerrymandering our state. Republicans targeted my seat in the last round of redistricting — I’ve faced these attacks firsthand, and I know how to fight back to protect our democracy. The fight for fair maps and equal representation in Georgia begins in this governor’s race, where it is essential that we elect a strong Democrat who will serve for two terms to oversee redistricting. That is my commitment to you.

The systematic demolition of the Voting Rights Act is complete: 6 people in robes just spit on the graves of every civil rights hero who bled for the right to vote. This isn’t a ruling. It’s a betrayal of our history and a direct assault on our future. Wake the hell up, America!

@leftcoastbabe @amyklobuchar STFU. Every American citizen has the right to vote. And every citizen deserves to vote for the candidate of their choice in their district. It’s not right to manufacture elections by carving up districts based on skin color

This Court ruling weakens protections against discrimination & undermines fair representation. As Justice Kagan said, it marks the “majority’s now-completed demolition of the Voting Rights Act.” We must keep fighting so every American has a voice in our democracy.

I’m so angry at what’s about to happen to Black folks in the former Confederacy. To be further disenfranchised. To live, again, in a state of unrepresentation. To be policed by laws you can’t influence.
