@AmicusRaj

There comes a point where a man must refuse to answer to his leader if he is also to answer to his conscience. A king is also under God & Law.

@RuchiraC The facial expressions of this couple are so repulsive that they speak volumes about the degree of theatrics in their lives.. Disgusting.. The child, though, is cute.. and seems to be trying to say something too.. Better the child be heard than these morons.

Wg Cdr Anuma Acharya (Retd)@AnumaVidisha

The courage to face the press does not come from theatrics…teleprompters or carefully curated imagery.. it comes from a lifetime spent in pursuit of knowledge…intellect and conviction…
Smita Sharma@Smita_Sharma

Not a single press conference by the Prime Minister held in the country since 2014. Only select interviews with filtered pliant questions. This is the world’s largest democracy and the press has a right to ask questions directly to its elected Prime Minister. One way Mann Ki Baat is not an alternative to a PC. Diplomats, bureaucrats and ministers answering questions are not the same as heads of states and governments answering media questions in a democracy. That is called accountability and responsibility. There are countries where press freedom is taken seriously. And India has stopped the tradition of foreign heads of govts and states taking questions after their press statements with the PM following formal talks in Delhi .Similarly except for the US where the PM is forced to take two Qs (fixed from the Indian side) and initial UK trip in 2015, foreign heads of states and govts have stopped taking Qs from their press after joint remarks of top leaders because of the insistence from the visiting Indian govt side. This needs to stop. Surely a Prime Minister who enjoys such a strong mandate cannot continue to shy away from legitimate questions that others answering on his behalf will not carry the same weight.

For those in the world who don’t know, the Chief Justice of India made a reference likening youngsters to cockroaches. This went viral and prompted @abhijeet_dipke to launch the Cockroach Janta Party (Cockroach People’s Party), a digital political movement which many now hope will actually become a proper political party. Within 24 hours or so they have crossed 20,000 members, have a political symbol and a manifesto in line with the ideals of the Indian Constitution. While this may have started out as a gag, it is now turning serious and people are already beginning to see a new political movement possibility driven by Gen Z. Watch this space. We are seeing the birth of a new political movement in India in the digital space with people declaring “I am a cockroach”, and “cockroach power”.

Date of appointment of a Judge of the Supreme Court decides the seniority and eventually who gets to become Chief Justice of India and for how long. Does this explain the 'extraordinary emergency' with which strength of Supreme Court has been increased through an 'Ordinance'? An ordinance can only be promulgated when both Houses of Parliament are not in session. The Budget Session ended barely a month ago. The cabinet approved this increase in strength merely few weeks after the session ended. Were they deliberately waiting for the session to end? Or are we to believe that Govt is so poor at planning that it couldn't bring a Bill to this effect in the Budget Session? And that pendency of cases in SC, built over the years, needs such an urgent resolution that Govt couldn't wait till July when Monsoon Session will begin? On the face of it, this seems like a rather uncontroversial decision that would have easily passed in #Parliament. Then, why is the Parliament being bypassed now? Is this a move to get some particular judges appointed to SC just in time to hear some particular cases pending before the court? Also, what is the rationale behind the number '37'? Why not 36 or 39? How are these decisions taken? What are the factors considered? We will never know because an Ordinance forecloses the possibility of Govt justifying its decision 'before' enacting a law. Ofcourse, this would be painted as a 'historic' decision as all decisions of Govt are. But the real intent may only be known later.

@mkatju I totally agree with you. But I would like to remind you of your own tenure. During your time, you too often made such observations — of course, apart from the sher-o-shayari and literary references, which we all cherished. Yet, your off-the-cuff remarks were equally well known.

Judges should talk less in Court By Justice Katju While hearing a petition of a lawyer who wanted to be designated as a senior advocate, the Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant reportedly said that some unemployed youth were like cockroaches, and end up becoming media persons, social media users, and RTI activists, who start attacking anyone. He also reportedly said '' There were already parasites in society who attack the system, and you want to join hands with them ? ''. timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/youngste… When a lot of criticism was made of these remarks, he issued a clarification stating that he had been misquoted, and he was referring to people entering professions with fake and bogus degrees. timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/misquote… The point, however, is that why should he have made such observations at all, which compelled him to issue a clarification ? The bench presided over by the CJI should have heard the petitioner and the respondent, and then passed whatever order they thought suitable. How do cockroaches and parasites come into the picture ? There is an oft quoted statement of a former Lord Chancellor of England Sir Francis Bacon '' A much talking judge is like an ill tuned cymbal '', which means judges should talk less in court. Their job is to listen, not talk, in court. Talking is the lawyer's job. Of course if the judge needs some clarification, he can ask the lawyer for it. But otherwise he should remain silent, and after the hearing pass whatever order he thinks appropriate. The pen is ultimately in his hand. indicanews.com/judges-should-… When I was in London once I visited the British High Court during the hearing of a case. There was almost pin drop silence in the courtroom, the lawyer arguing in a very low voice, and the judge hearing silently. Occasionally, the judge would ask the lawyer for some clarification, but otherwise he was silent throughout the hearing. This is how courts should function. A Court should have an atmosphere of serenity, tranquillity, and calm, and judges should speak little countercurrents.org/2025/05/indian… Former CJI Gavai, on a plea in a petition before the Supreme Court by a Hindu to restore the beheaded idol of Lord Vishnu at Khajuraho reportedly said : “Go and ask the deity itself to do something. You say you are a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. So go and pray to it ( to restore its own head ) “ Where was the need for such a remark ? Gavai could have dismissed the petition simply saying that there was no merit in it. Former CJI DY Chandrachud would talk endlessly in Court. All this lowers the dignity of a Court, and it also increases the chances of the judge being misconstrued. As a former Judge of the Supreme Court and as an elder brother, I respectfully advise the CJI and his companion Judges of the Supreme Court to pay heed to the dictum of Sir Francis Bacon, and start talking less in Court
