@AminJohansen

I love science. I love doing it, and I love reading about it. I just wish people knew more about it- so here I am!

Today we published a work that outlines a fundamental step in how NMDA receptors, an ion channel that controls connectivity between neurons, primes itself for opening. This has implications for how other channels activate, and provides a new drug target. cell.com/neuron/fulltex…

@david_colquhoun @LizzieGadd I think people still rely on journals to tell us which manuscripts are of quality. No one wants to have to read every paper closely and make their own decision. Seeing "nature" in the citation reassures people that they are spending their limited time reading is well vetted.

@LizzieGadd You spend a lot of time wondering how best to rank journals, This seems odd at a time when paper journals barely exist and everything is read on the web. Journals are no longer relevant.

Grateful that I get to attend #SfNConnectome21, come see my poster (P046.01) Role of auxiliary subunits in the biogenesis of AMPA receptors, January 13th at 10:00 -10:30 AM (EST)🧠for a lively discussion! Very excited to present at my first #SFN as an #NSPeeps!

@leonDIslas Some old school papers - before ion channels were really a thing. Hille, 1971, JGP. using organics and rev. pots to measure pore size Armstrong, 1971, JGP, block to identify a gate.

I need this for Christmas next year. Its the lego DNA helix discovery set. You have to sign up with Lego's website to support it so they produce it. Look- its gotta a little Rosalind Franklin!!

Excited about our new paper in Neuron. authors.elsevier.com/a/1cAF63BtfGx4… A not so novel technique - measuring latencies to 1st channel opening - in this case for single NMDARs offers new insights into receptor gating.

@_MarcGielen_ Thank you! Its so hard to tell how a manuscript is going to be received. Lol, my heart skipped a beat when they sent it out for review.

@elonmusk @tesla As a medical student I am deeply terrified at the profound shortage of ventilators, not just world wide- but where I work. Stony Brook University Hospital is the primary hub for COVID-19 treatment on Long Island, NY. We need more ventilators NOW.

@RandPaul Chemistry much? Methane is CH4. There is no oxygen. You must have forgotten a great deal of science if you're not concerned about climate change. I assume you had an understanding of basic science when you went to medical school. I expect better from physcians in congress.

With so many billionaires about, why not a private prize of $10 million for the scientist who genetically creates an O2 producing organism that will thrive in the frigid, methane lakes of Titan?

Despite climate alarmist predictions, humans will likely survive for hundreds of millions of years into the future. In the meantime, we should begin creating atmospheres on suitable moons or planets. cosmosmagazine.com/space/pushing-…
