How I Use Credit Cards Without Ever Falling Into Debt | How do I plan it all This is the exact monthly framework I’ve followed for 4–5 years. Nothing in my plan is fixed. Everything is variable and decided on Day 1 of the month. Income Hits → Planning Starts The moment salary or income arrives, I allocate it across categories using structured percentage buckets. 1️⃣ Needs Essential and fully tracked: - Utilities - Groceries - Society maintenance Every recurring expense is accounted for. The 30% allocation adjusts if a month demands more. 2️⃣ Wants Highly tracked but flexible: - Swiggy / Zomato - Eating out - Shopping - Fuel (variable for me, so kept here) 3️⃣ Gadgets (Pre-EMI Approach) - I don’t take gadget EMIs. - If I plan to change phones every 3 years or buy a MacBook next year, I allocate monthly now. -Yearly bonus accelerate this bucket. - When the purchase happens, it’s already funded. 4️⃣ Ad Hoc (Festive / Seasonal) Diwali, extra shopping, travel months—this bucket absorbs the spikes with no stress or credit rollover. 5️⃣ Savings & Investments (Non-Negotiable) Covers kids’ future and personal wealth creation. 6️⃣ Short-Term Goals + Buffer Underrated but essential: house painting in 5 years, appliance replacement, unexpected repairs. Small monthly allocations. The 3-Column Rule Every entry has: Category | Amount | Source of Payment Examples: - Electricity → Amazon Pay voucher via HDFC Infinia - Shopping → Vouchers via HDFC Infinia or Axis Atlas - Travel / big spends → Axis Atlas / SmartBuy redemption - Fuel → RBL Indian Oil Xtra Why This Works for Me ? -I don’t track “how much I spent.” I decide “how much I will spend.” Credit cards become reward tools, optimization tools, and miles accelerators—not debt traps. Note: this is a very basic way to manage expense, there are better tools/ apps available, but I prefer it on an excel.
