I wrote about the lack of administrative support for the liberal arts in @nytimes. The standard story we hear is that students don't want it. But a darker reality is that even when it wins big with students and donors it loses with those in power. nytimes.com/2025/07/17/opi…

📚 Today's #MondayRead is a new study in PLOS Medicine presenting the largest retrospective analysis of antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) data from Africa (2016–2019). 📊 Drawing from 819,584 culture records across 205 labs in 14 countries, the study highlights: – High AMR in E. coli and S. aureus – Higher resistance among inpatients, men, and older adults – Limited linkage to clinical data (only 12% of records) ⚠️ The findings point to variability in testing capacity and data quality across settings, with implications for strengthening surveillance and lab infrastructure. Immigrants today are 60 percent less likely to be incarcerated (30 percent relative to US-born Whites). This relative decline occurred among immigrants from all regions and cannot be explained by changes in observable characteristics or immigration policy. aeaweb.org/articles?id=10…

For years, American PR firm v-Fluence has worked with a network of players in the agrochemical industry to ensure that the use of harmful pesticides in various countries, including Kenya continues. Despite mounting evidence of the harm they cause, v-Fluence and its partners have downplayed the risks of pesticides and discredited environmentalists pushing for an end to their sale. One such pesticide is paraquat, linked to cases of Parkinson’s disease. Why does this PR firm run a secret members-only website for some of the world’s largest pesticide companies? Find out this Sunday in our upcoming documentary, #PoisonPR

The worst drought in living memory is taking place in Mudzi, Zimbabwe. It has destroyed 90% of the crops and put pressure on water supplies, leaving people with little food. Millions of Zimbabweans are being forced to rely on handouts.
