I think a reason DMC has been in a weird limbo is the series is so attached to Dante and Vergil that any attempt to move on from them has been mishandled or the fans reject it. There's so much attachment to how the sons of sparda play that nothing else fills the void.

@noctinfocus Yeah, a lot of common surnames like smith come from when the governments of those days decided people needed surnames for keeping better census data, so they would just use their job as the surname.
