Two weeks of spring practice under Matt Campbell. Here is what we actually know. D'Anton Lynn came home to coach at his alma mater and introduced obnoxious communication as the defensive standard on day one. Ryan Clanton lived in a garage in San Francisco and became Penn State's offensive line coach. His standard is dogs only and a 331-pound tackle punched him in the chest to prove he understood it. Zachary Gleason visited Happy Valley, heard players talk about this program without coaches in the room, and came back the next week to commit. Rocco Becht is throwing more than anyone expected and mentoring freshman quarterbacks between his own reps. None of this shows up in a recruiting ranking. None of it appears in a preseason win total projection. But all of it is real. Something is being built in Happy Valley. You can feel it. We Are. 🦁

ROCCO’ DEBUT: At his presser after the opening day of spring practice, Coach Campbell said QB Rocco Becht was ahead of schedule on rehab from shoulder surgery. Likely not to see any action this spring. But at day two today, Rocco was all decked out in his purple #3 rifling throws all over/running drills. Positive sign. 🏈🔵⚪️

Penn State fans — it's time to meet Connor Barry. With Rocco Becht limited and Alex Manske now heading to surgery and out for spring — Barry just became the most important quarterback on the practice field. Here is who he is. He started at Appalachian State. Transferred to Christopher Newport in Virginia. Started 22 games. Threw for 5,561 yards and 55 touchdowns. Last season he led Christopher Newport to its first ever undefeated regular season. 10-0. Second in the entire country in passing efficiency. Division III All-American. Gagliardi Trophy semifinalist — the Division III Heisman. When he committed to Penn State he said "I believe in what Penn State is building right now with Coach Campbell and the staff. It's a high level program with a strong culture." Nobody came to Happy Valley expecting Connor Barry to matter this much this fast. But here we are. Day two of spring practice. The backup is in surgery. The starter is limited. And a Division III All-American who went 10-0 last year is running the first team offense at Penn State. Campbell specifically sought an experienced veteran for this room. Barry was that pick. Turns out Campbell may have made that call at exactly the right time. Spring practice just got a lot more interesting. We Are. 🦁
