After forty years of excavation, University of Houston archaeologists Arlen and Diane Chase discovered the tomb of Te' Kab Chaak, the founder of Caracol’s ruling dynasty. This marks the first time in Maya archaeology that human remains have been directly connected to a ruler known from hieroglyphic inscriptions. It is also the only confirmed royal tomb ever found at the major Maya city of Caracol. The discovery represents a milestone in understanding Maya political history. Te' Kab Chaak ruled from AD 331 to 350, during Caracol’s earliest phase before it rose to power in the southern Yucatán Peninsula. The breakthrough came when the team revisited a site first excavated in 1993 and detected a deep underground void. A simple measuring stick revealed the chamber’s depth, signaling something extraordinary below. That moment confirmed decades of careful research had finally paid off. Inside the seven-foot-high burial chamber, the walls were coated in red cinnabar, symbolizing power and ritual significance. The tomb contained pottery vessels, jadeite jewelry, carved bone tubes, and a jade-and-shell mosaic death mask placed over the king’s face. These offerings reflect royal status and early Maya burial traditions. The find highlights both the patience required in archaeology and the deep time separating modern researchers from ancient civilizations. #archaeohistories
