Bee update: May 2026 It's the middle of the Spring nectar run in NE Tennessee. Honey supers, the split, and yet another swarm capture. What's happening in the hills on this beautiful Saturday? 🐝🧵

All in all, such a great day. It appears that I will be able to rob the bear bees, as they have recovered well from the split. I started the year with a single hive, and now have 4! What a blessing.

The honey super only contained a few frames, and they were massing on the lid to build comb. Fortunately they had only just started, so I didn't have a mess to work through. There was also a mouse nest in the brood chamber. It took some careful maintenance, but I got them homed.

@Atmosphaeria The mead I made 3 years ago is getting a really nice flavor to it now. Maybe I'll do a little run this summer. Made a batch with wild blackberries, cloves, and cinnamon. That has been the favorite.

My favourite flower of all time is back! Field cow-wheat (Melampyrum arvense) is a hemi-parasite from the family Orobanchaceae. It can photosynthesize but still steals nutrients from nearby grasses. Its seeds have a nutritious organ that attracts ants, for dispersion.
