@hannahsrudd@NathandeRoz Ultimately we all want more fish in the sea so goals should be the same. Always happy to work with anyone that wants to see thriving fish stocks that can be harvested sustainably👍
@hannahsrudd@NathandeRoz Could have done with the angling lobby on this one, unfortunately 70% + of craw fisherman in support of better regulation and still they fail us. If anglers caught crayfish we may have had a chance😂 the same would apply to crab no doubt as well!!
Latest @marinemanagementgovuk 📣 announcement on crawfish management to keep fishery open until 16th December. It seems a high-risk strategy putting socio-economics ahead of stock conservation as without a sustainable stock there is no fishery. Thoughts? 🤷♂️ #crawfish#fisheries
@jonnorris12 I bet you never thought you’d be typing those words out😂 it’s a fantastic fishery, with a huge stock of fish, and growing each year. If it’s managed correctly and the uk get more quota it could be a lifeline for the inshore fleet🤞
Any of my fisherman friends know what this is? Looks like a flounder/lemon sole but the fin goes all round to the mouth. Been caught on rod and line from the shore.

First National Day of Remembrance for Fishing next Sunday 12th May with services across the UK. The service in Newlyn will be led by @RevDurkin at the Fishermen’s Memorial at the end of the green in Newlyn at 11am. In event of rain it will be over the road at St Peter’s Church
@jonnorris12@Trawler1x1 They’re Couches bream, sign of sea temperatures rising. Saw the first one 25-30 years ago. In the last 15 years much more common and generally 1-2 on the market everyday now
Newlyn fishing legend and gill net pioneer Janner Thomas reflects on the need for fisheries management at the right time and place. A must view for fisheries managers and policy makers. youtu.be/r2Hvo_RkoJM
@TheLobsterDr We’ve been seeing slippers for the last 30years. Don’t see any more now than we used to but other species like Mediterranean octopus, Amber and Almaco Jacks and Couch’s Bream more common and increasing year on year
A slipper lobster caught in Falmouth Bay by pot fisher Ned Bailey. A species common in the Mediterranean, reputedly caught more frequently here in Cornwall over recent years. Clearly a candidate for studying marine species range expansions with oceanic warming and climate change.
@BD_Stew@Giveitago1 Slight difference in appearance and size😂 The first Almaco Jack I caught was around 25-30years ago, I had another one last year! Few and far between!!
@TheLobsterDr@Ravenscroft_DJ@NathandeRoz@DefraGovUK Lots of factors in the post release survival rate, would be different here for lots of reasons. No study done but would say it would be closer to 95% from my experience. Closed season and effort control needed as well if we’re still going to have a sustainable fishery in 5 years!
@Ravenscroft_DJ@NathandeRoz@DefraGovUK Crawfish harder to manage, as we know less about them. Post-release survival may be an issue; >95% of crab & lobsters returned from pots survive, whereas a Med crawfish study suggests high mortality when returned from nets (up to ~50%!). So need to restrict effort, not just MLS.
#crawfishhour A species absolutely booming but in urgent need of immediate management plan to protect fishers from themselves. @DefraGovUK FMPs glacial speed and inability to use emergency powers is massively disappointing. My generation will neither forgive or forget.
@NPHC_1906 for 36 years. They are also fully recyclable, safer, cheaper and will last 10 times longer. Please reconsider replacing the existing constant use ladders with emergency type you’re trialling. Thank you
@NPHC_1906 After several strands of communications have been exhausted to no avail, I thought I’d try a more public one. The new ladders that you are trialling are not fit for purpose and are dangerous. No one that has used them feels safe and would prefer the type that’s been in place 1/2
