A study from the German Agency for International Cooperation found that just 2% of data used to train global AI models comes from Africa. With over 2000 languages and a growing but uneven digital footprint, how does Africa build AI that truly reflects the continent’s diversity?

I found this video extremely moving in a world where there are very few black superstar role models who live their values with quiet dignity. This touched me deeply. This is Winston Rodney, one of the greatest reggae superstars to ever come out of Jamaica, known globally as Burning Spear, together with his wife, Sonia Rodney, who is living with Alzheimer’s and dementia. They have been married for decades, and Sonia Rodney has been central to his entire career, not only as a spouse but as his manager, business partner and the guardian of his legacy. For years, she handled his bookings, tours, productions and label matters, ensuring that Burning Spear remained independent and in full control of his artistic direction. Many reggae historians agree that without Sonia Rodney’s sharp management, Burning Spear would not have achieved his global stature, longevity and cultural impact. I decided to share this because, in a world where too many black superstars abandon the women who built with them, or discard their wives once fame arrives, Burning Spear stands as a powerful exception. I am not saying there is anything wrong with marrying outside your race, but it is important to talk honestly about patterns that exist, and why examples like this matter. Burning Spear, for me, is the consummate black superstar role model. He stood with his wife through thick and thin. At a time when he could have placed her in a home, continued touring and lived the chaotic lifestyle many reggae stars are known for, he chose loyalty, love and dignity. In a music world where you have artists like Elephant Man with forty children, Ninja Man with twenty three and Aston “Family Man” Barrett, Bob Marley’s bassist, with over fifty, Burning Spear chose a different path. He chose family, stability and honour. People like myself, who have large social media platforms, have a duty to amplify this kind of love and devotion. This man married his wife more than forty years ago and promised to walk with her through everything. And he has lived that promise. Maximum respect to @burningmusic. You are teaching us, as black men, to honour our wives in good times and in difficult times. Thank you, Elder, for showing us what real love, loyalty and manhood look like. 🙏🏿🙏🏿

Repeated Patterns 🤕

I have attached this 74-minute documentary film at a time when America is once again threatening to depose the Venezuelan government, this time by advising aircraft to avoid Venezuelan skies. It is a timely reminder of how foreign powers manufacture narratives, engineer crises and justify intervention under the guise of protecting democracy or fighting drugs. In 2006, I won a British government scholarship to study documentary filmmaking at Master’s level at Brunel University in London. One of my lecturers, Prof Michael Wayne, who is still at Brunel University today, introduced us to the concept of propaganda and how film and television are used to shape public perception. One of the films he brought to class for us to watch and dissect was The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. It was made by two Irish filmmakers who happened to be visiting Venezuela in 2002, and before they had even begun their planned filming, a coup erupted. They suddenly found themselves at the centre of the crisis with their cameras rolling. The coup was inspired and encouraged by elements linked to the American government, which had long viewed Hugo Chávez as a threat to its geopolitical interests. The filmmakers captured how the opposition, parts of the military, the private media and external actors collaborated to remove a democratically elected president. They also documented how ordinary Venezuelans and loyal sections of the army mobilised, pushed back and returned Chávez to power within 48 hours. It is one of the most important documentary records of a coup taking place in real time. Today we are witnessing Donald Trump going after Venezuela again, a country with the largest proven oil reserves in the world. Surprise, surprise, the excuse this time is “drugs”, the same way “weapons of mass destruction” were used as an excuse in Iraq. Yet this is the same Trump who is preparing to pardon the former president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, who was convicted in the United States and sentenced to 45 years for drug trafficking. US prosecutors proved that Hernández helped move hundreds of tonnes of cocaine through Honduras into the United States, undermining Trump’s claim that his crusade against Venezuela is genuinely about fighting drugs. Watch this film to understand how coups are engineered, how narratives are manufactured and how the media is used as a weapon. All the visuals you see in the documentary are real, filmed as events unfolded. It is a powerful reminder of how foreign interests destabilise nations, and how the people of Venezuela resisted manipulation and restored their democracy through collective action.

Billionaires have spent $19 million to try and defeat Zohran Mamdani. Over the next week, they’re going to spend a hell of a lot more. Early voting has started. If New York is going to stand up to the oligarchy, we need everyone to get out the vote and elect Zohran Mamdani.

Congratulations to new Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado for her courageous struggle to bring democracy to Venezuela. It should inspire those engaged in similar struggles around the world - and remind those of us lucky enough to live in America that we have a solemn responsibility to constantly preserve and defend our own hard-won democratic traditions.
