Inside Anarchist Activity: Why Real Investigative Reporting Doesn’t Match Online Commentary : Exclusive Over the past year, there has been a surge of so-called "reporters" who simply rip other people's footage, push their own narratives, and present themselves as experts. The problem is that much of what they put out is not fact—it's opinion. Some will even take stolen footage, place their own watermark on it, and present it as if they were actually there covering the story themselves. Many of these individuals have never spent time conducting real investigations. They don't spend years on the ground, speaking to people, verifying information, or putting themselves in dangerous situations to understand what's really happening. Instead, they rely on content created by others and then tell the public what they think is going on. When it comes to certain activist and anarchist circles, much of what happens is never discussed publicly or on camera. Many of the people involved will never openly speak about what they do, who they associate with, or what takes place behind the scenes. There are layers of information, private conversations, and internal dynamics that the average person never sees. I've spent a decade—if not longer—investigating some of these groups. I've put myself face-to-face with these people, attended countless protests and events, spoken to people from all sides, and spent years trying to understand how they operate and what motivates them. What many people don't understand is that this kind of work takes years. You have to learn patterns, understand how people think, recognize behaviors, and anticipate what comes next. You have to get inside their mindset and understand how they view the world. You don't learn that in a few months. You don't learn it in a year. You don't learn it in two years. It takes years of being on the ground, building sources, documenting events, and studying these movements. A perfect example is how many self-proclaimed experts try to force these groups into a political box. I constantly hear people screaming "DSA, DSA, DSA" or claiming these groups are loyal to one political party or another. After years of documenting them, that's not what I've seen. Some groups may temporarily align themselves with political organizations or politicians when it serves their immediate goals, but those alliances rarely last. I've watched activists turn on the same politicians and organizations they previously stood beside. If you're only looking at who they're standing next to today, you're missing who they may be targeting tomorrow. That's the kind of nuance you only understand after years of watching patterns develop. Sometimes I read reports from self-proclaimed analysts and investigative reporters and ask myself, "What the hell are these people even talking about?" Much of it bears little resemblance to what I've seen firsthand over years of reporting. Many are simply recycling other people's footage, repeating rumors, or pushing narratives that sound good online but don't match reality. In my opinion, some of these people are doing more to help these groups than expose them. By spreading inaccurate information and presenting opinions as facts, they create confusion and distract people from what's actually happening. That's why real investigative work matters. For those of us who have spent years on the ground, speaking to thousands of people, building sources, documenting events, and putting ourselves in uncomfortable or dangerous situations to understand what's really happening, it's frustrating and disrespectful to watch others claim expertise without putting in the effort. 2 yrs ago when I had surgery for cancer, the lady in the next bed was visited by a hospital administrator she had not met before, not her doctor, who stood at the end of her bed and said she had no option but to have MAID. The woman said “Absolutely not! I plan to get up and dance again”. The administrator then started to argue with her saying she had no choice but MAID without explaining why. The woman said “Well I’ll talk to my family when they come on Monday.” The administrator replied “They’re coming on Monday? Good, I’ll talk to them”. She headed off the family on Monday before they saw her and they came to our room primed to convince her she had to have MAID according to the hospital. She then argued with the family that she didn’t want it. During the day she was firm but at night when they weren’t there she cried. Ultimately they convinced her and started preparing a party for her to say goodbye to all her friends. So sad. And it has made me more skeptical about MAID procedures.
