Somehow, what I said was deleted on someone’s post, so I’ll say it again. He asked, “Who do you follow — the Pope or Trump?” This is my reply:
I stand with Jesus Christ first, and with His Church. Our
faith isn’t built on personalities. Saint Paul warned
against that when he said some follow Paul and some
follow Apollos, but we are meant to follow Christ above
all. I was taught that when we look to men instead of
God, confusion enters the heart, because man is flesh
and imperfect. God works through His ordained
ministers, but Christ remains the center.
I respect the Holy Father as the successor of Peter, but I
also understand that Catholics are not required to agree
with every personal comment he makes. The Pope is
protected from error only when he speaks ex cathedra,
defining a doctrine on faith or morals for the whole
Church. That is rare, and that is what Catholics must
assent to. Outside of that, he may speak as a pastor, a
teacher, or a humanitarian — and those things are not
the same as dogma.
Throughout history, conflicts have always been present,
often rising to confront very great evils of their time.
God is the ultimate Judge, and that is how I try to see it.
Whether I personally agree or disagree with the Pope is
not what matters most. What matters is what God has
in mind and His design for the Church. In the end, the
truth will come out and prevail, because where there is
darkness, the light will shine. I pray for peace, I pray for
unity, and I pray for calm minds that can think things
through. Even for myself, I want to look to Christ for
answers, and to His Church, which He founded.
My loyalty is to Christ first, to the Catholic Church, and
to the doctrine handed down through the ages — not to
any individual leader’s personal opinions. Through
everything happening in the world, I choose Christ, His
Church, and the authority He established.
