Other languages can be used but it must still be compiled to JavaScript to run on browsers. Browsers only understand JavaScript and webAssembly.

JavaScript became the default because it runs natively in the browser and eventually grew into a full ecosystem for frontend, backend, mobile, and even desktop development. So it's less about JavaScript being the better language and more about the ecosystem, adoption, and the web choosing it early.
