@coreyrpayne @Soc4Pal “ethical” often stands in for a claim to power in the association; there is legitimate heterogeneity among the membership on many political questions, so I think it’s right for the association to be reticent to adopt a political position advanced by only a portion of its members

@AndrewJPerrin @Soc4Pal I hear that. I would say that I think it's reasonable for members to want an organization to which they pay dues to be invested ethically, for example. That requires making an argument about what is ethical, which is of course inherently political.

Just one of the insane parts of the responses to @Soc4Pal: ASA says policy statements are simply divisive posturing and should therefore be avoided, while simultaneously ruling out of court any meaningful demands (i.e., boycott & divest)—leaving posturing as the only thing left.

NIH is not issuing awards. You may think that it's because they it is coming up with new directions of research...The apposite is true. Here is a graph showing how many fewer new funding opportunities that NIH has posted over time. -91%, a trend that started on Jan 2025.

When faculty feel alone in the classroom and uncertainty clouds academic freedom, it’s a reminder of how vital trust, transparency, and community really are. UNC faculty member Dr. Mimi Chapman describes this experience. Read more here: ow.ly/TrBm50YmHyb

I expect raised eyebrows from excellent sociologists like @AndrewJPerrin but I'm taking the risk because I hope he'll see that my target is not what is good in the field but what is degraded and bad.

For the past two decade everyone in higher ed has been talking about scale as transformation. What could go wrong.

If higher education should focus on civic education as part of its commitment to the public good, what should that civic education look like? And how will we know if we have been successful in designing and providing it? cfau.aei.org/civic-educatio…

Today I'm releasing probably the most important scholarly thing I've ever worked on - a report based on talking with 144 people about why they don't vote or only vote regularly, and on what needs to be done to build a democracy that can include everyone. swarthmore.edu/understanding-…

@anecdotal 💯. But in order to do so credibly the conversation needs to be pluralist.

@anecdotal @JerusalemDemsas I’d be willing to entertain that theory, but only under the conditions that we recognize that whether it becomes a pollster’s business is also a product of a particular set of political configurations.

@JerusalemDemsas It’s actually “none of your business” — if pollsters gave that option it would be unmistakable.

An ICE agent fired multiple shots at Renee Nicole Good, murdering her at point blank range. Rep. Pressley just offered a subpoena in the Oversight committee for all information from DHS related to her murder today in Minneapolis. Republicans blocked it. We need answers.

My review of Arlie Russell Hochschild's _Stolen Pride_ in Contemporary Sociology is out now: doi.org/10.1177/009430… . Bottom line: the book showcases Hochschild's characteristic amazing empathy and depth, but falls short examining why the things she observes turn out that way.

@anecdotal @chronicle Yes there is. But there is also dignity in being a passionate, generous, informed citizen. Forbearance is a democratic capacity but can only be practiced in the context of a democratic conversation.

@chronicle Colleges used to be interested in fostering professional maturity, instilling a certain sense of decorum to go along with the gowns and floppy hats. There is dignity in reticence, or at least knowing how to perform reserve and restraint.

I understand why those focused on "bias" on college campuses want data but it's time for more students to say "none of your business" to both professors and institutions. Because it is not the university's business to collect data on political views. chronicle.com/article/the-no…

New findings from Johns Hopkins University’s annual Baltimore Area Survey highlight how residents across Baltimore City and County are experiencing daily life. While neighborhood satisfaction and safety improved, disparities persist in food access, transportation, and environmental conditions. bit.ly/3KFG1ar

@anecdotal @JonHaidt Absolutely! We are methodologically heterogeneous. Nonreactive measures, administrative data, text analysis, ethnography, interviewing, focus groups….. all data have weaknesses; good sociology uses it strategically
