The comment came as Rapinoe raged against the IOC's decision to only let women play in women's sports. I was asked to write a letter of encouragement to a young man being received into the Catholic Church at last year’s Easter Vigil. He was facing significant opposition from protestant friends and family, as many converts do (and I know many have faced the same this year). I was not given his name. I share the letter because the person who asked me to write it thought it should be public, in case it is edifying to any converts in similar circumstances this year. LETTER TO A YOUNG MAN ON EASTER VIGIL 2025 Easter Vigil 2025 Dear young man, I was asked to write you a brief note of encouragement given the sorrows you have endured as you approach the precipice of the Holy Catholic Church. I speak to you as a fellow convert from protestantism, a fellow pilgrim who discovered the depths to which I had been deceived, even while I had received significant shards of truth. I speak to you as a man who also had to come out of the cave into the light, with all the fear and dread that entails. Know this: it is all worth it. Even if it entails a cross you had not previously imagined, there is nothing more precious and more to be desired than to come into full communion with the Holy Church of God. With that cross will come the grace to bear it unto eternal life. Recall Our Lord’s words (Matt. 10:37-39): He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for my sake will find it. And the admonition of his Old Testament type (Josh. 24:15): And if you be unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. And finally, Our Lord’s encouragement before laying down His own life (John 16:33): I have said this to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. Be assured of my prayers for you on this holiest of nights. The Saints and Angels rejoice. As for those who recoil in horror at tonight’s transaction: pray for them. Fast for them. Remember that it is not you who converts, but the Holy Spirit. Present the truth in all love and gentleness, fully recognizing the limits of your puny human capacity. Your duty is to present the fullness of the truth the best you know how. Not to convince. Not to convert. Once this duty is done, your prayer, penance, and mortification on their behalf will achieve far more than pushing the argument. Above all, perhaps, pray a daily Rosary for them and for yourself. Your own daily conversion is the prelude to theirs. I am so proud of you, dear and newly reborn brother. Be assured of my prayers.
