On this day, 58 years ago, my father, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was taken from us by assassination while still fully committed to confronting poverty, racism, and militarism. Even now, the truth of who he was and what he stood for is too often softened or reshaped into something easier to accept. But my father was not a convenient symbol. He was a man of deep conviction, disciplined courage, and unwavering love. He gave his life calling this nation to confront injustice and choose a better way. Today, I reflect not only on the pain of his assassination, but also on the power of his witness. His life, his sacrifice, and his commitment to nonviolence still call us to reject hate, resist injustice, and create the Beloved Community. On this day, I hold both the weight of that loss and the responsibility of that legacy. #MLK

My 2nd trip to Memphis is almost over and I’ve again really enjoyed my time here. So I felt the need to say something, especially after what LeBron said today. This city often gets a very bad rep and I’ve experienced that myself. Players shitting on it, media saying it’s dangerous, people asking me why I’d go here because I wouldn’t be safe, I’ve heard it all. All those people couldn’t be more wrong. This is a city very different from other “typical American cities”. Memphis has it’s own identity, an identity that makes it special. Memphis is a very warm and welcoming city. From the second my first trip started last year I’ve felt welcomed by the people. In the Fedexforum, on the streets, in the airport, in my hotel. My experiences have been nothing but positive. Not once have I felt unsafe or anything remotely close to it, not in my week long stay last year and also not in my almost 2 week long stay this year. Now of course every city has its weaknesses and room for improvement. And that’s where I have to give a lot of credit to the mayor and the people who run this city. Even in the year between my trips there has been clear improvement. The streets are cleaner, there’s roadwork being done and downtown is noticeably more lively compared to last year. Don’t let people who have never been here tell you what and how this city is. Memphis is a unique and beautiful city, Memphis is Memphis. I have truly loved my time here and I can’t wait to keep coming back in the future. But first one more game against Toronto tomorrow.

It’s #BlackHistoryMonth and I have to ask: Are people including enslaved Africans, descendants of those enslaved, and Black people whose unjust, low-wage labor sustained the economy in the 1800s/1900s as immigrants when they say “immigrants built this country”? Because chattel slavery was for the express purpose of building empire. But our ancestors weren’t folks who came here seeking a better life. They arrived in chains, were bred like cattle, and severely violated, sexually and otherwise. Their trauma shouldn’t be diminished or forgotten, even in efforts toward freedom from ICE’s inhumane, violent tactics. We can only get to justice for all when truth is taught, embraced, and spoken.

We broke ground on the first home in the Essential Housing Program. Over 65 units are to be created in Uptown and Binghampton on 43 vacant lots. The CRA has partnered with 13 emerging and local developers to make these new opportunities. Join us! cramemphis.org/memphis-essent…
