The ‘Dauphiné’ as geographical entity effectively ceased to exist with French Revolution, but name/concept were preserved by, among other things, a newspaper, a bike race & a potato dish. The race has increasingly ‘betrayed’ the old regional borders in recent years, & now this…

Tadej Pogačar won the very last Dauphiné: from now on the race will be known as the ‘Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes’. Bit sad IMO, both because of the history associated with old name & because it was one of those cycling oddities/anachronisms that are part of the sport’s mystique.

Today‘s Giro stage passes through San Bonifacio & Lonigo, respectively birthplaces of the late Davide Rebellin & UAE DS Fabio Baldato, after 93 & 102 km. Before that, after 64km, Cologna Veneta, birthplace of industrial filled pasta magnate (& Giro sponsor) Giovanni Rana.

Rewatch of 96 Sanremo - last one won by move on Cipressa - won’t bring Pog much cheer. We caveat everything from that era with nudges & winks, but even bigger travesty in Sanremo was motos. Pog will need to recruit 9 Kawasakis between Cipressa & Poggio to ‘do a Gabriele Colombo’.
