Clear out brings photo from 1980 bike race on the West London Hedgerley circuit. I'm furthest left in colours of Paddington Cycling Club on my Condor Sienna (not quite on the wheel on dodgy descent!). Note "leather sieves", brake cables in the air, toeclips/straps, wool shorts.

I don’t post much here now but this is bugging me - there was a newspaper style cycling publication in the 90s…..not around for long (down here anyway)…..no nonsense mix of racing….lot of national stuff….some global…..but what was it called?

Am fairly sure they meant Trofeo Laigueglia, Giro di Sardegna, Gent-Wevelgem & Amstel Gold Race, but, mainly, can't help longing for a time when establishing how these race names were actually spelled would have required a sprawling Interpol investigation.

Reading a major Spanish newspaper's preview of 1973 Vuelta, in which they note that, in first four months of the season, Eddy Merckx has already won the "Giro de Lainguglia, Giro de Cerdeña, Grand Wevelgen & Amstel Gol Race."

It is as we feared. Even after a month training in Australia, there was no way new INEOS recruit Oscar Onley's pale Scottish genes could overcome the truly gash 2026-issue white shorts. The 'natural break' nightmare. Good luck fella!
