The National Congress of Brazil (Portuguese: Congresso Nacional do Brasil) is the legislative body of the Federative Republic of Brazil. It is a bicameral institution, consisting of two houses: the Chamber of Deputies (Câmara dos Deputados) and the Federal Senate (Senado Federal). Chamber of Deputies (Câmara dos Deputados): The lower house of the National Congress, the Chamber of Deputies is composed of representatives who are elected by proportional representation to serve four-year terms. The number of deputies from each state is determined by its population. Federal Senate (Senado Federal): The upper house of the National Congress, the Federal Senate is composed of senators, each representing one of the 26 states and the Federal District. Senators are elected to serve eight-year terms, and each state is entitled to three senators. The National Congress is responsible for enacting federal laws, approving the federal budget, and overseeing the work of the executive branch. It convenes in the capital city, Brasília, in the modernist building designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, which is an iconic symbol of Brazilian democracy. The legislative process in Brazil involves the introduction of bills, debates, and voting in both houses. For a bill to become law, it must be approved by a majority in both the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate. The President of Brazil has the power to veto legislation, but the veto can be overridden by a two-thirds majority in both houses.
