That man is so wrong
The Bible didn’t say, “leave your parents and abandon them.” It said, “leave and cleave.” That means the order changes. Before marriage, your parents were your first responsibility. Once you get married, your spouse becomes your primary family. Your parents are still important, but your husband or wife now comes first in the order of your earthly relationships.
So I honestly don’t understand why someone would have a standing monthly responsibility to send money to their parents without their spouse knowing. You’re not asking for permission to help your parents; you’re simply being transparent with the person you’re building a life with.
Imagine your spouse finding out after months or years that you’ve been sending money every month without mentioning it. The first question will naturally be, “If you could hide this, what else are you hiding?” That’s how trust begins to crack over something that could have been a simple conversation.
For me, couples should sit down and agree on these things. “This is what we’ll be sending to my parents monthly, and this is what we’ll be sending to yours.” Once there’s understanding, there’s peace.
Now, if your mother calls unexpectedly because of an emergency or your father suddenly needs help and you decide to send money immediately, that’s different. Those are spontaneous acts of kindness. But a recurring monthly commitment shouldn’t be hidden from your spouse.
Marriage thrives on openness. Transparency doesn’t reduce your authority or independence—it protects the trust you’re both trying to build.

A woman discovered that her husband had secretly been sending almost half of his salary to his mother every month for six years. The issue wasn't that he was helping his mother. The issue was that he never told his wife. Meanwhile, they were struggling to pay rent, delaying their children's school fees, and constantly arguing about money. When she confronted him, he said: "That's my mother. I don't need permission to take care of her." The wife replied: "And I'm your wife. We were building this family together while you were hiding major financial decisions from me." The marriage is now hanging by a thread... Who do you think is wrong?
