The stated idea is to make it easier to close Lafayette Square when necessary while still leaving it accessible to the public most of the time. I think that’s BS as they’re also looking to permanently fence in Pennsylvania Avenue. Restricting access to the people’s house.
Dan Diamond@ddiamond

New: a Trump plan would fence Pennsylvania Avenue outside the White House. The new permanent fences would be at 15th and 17th St NW and allow the Secret Service/White House to more easily close the area if they think there's a security risk. washingtonpost.com/politics/2026/…

For all the talk of focusing on lethality, Hegseth sure does whine a lot about facial hair
Haley Britzky@halbritz

Amid the tenuous situation between the US and Iran in recent weeks, Pete Hegseth boarded a US Navy ship for what was supposed to be a routine visit with sailors. The visit was marred by facial hair, @snlyngaas reports. Shortly after the visit, Pentagon officials held a series of meetings in which they told subordinates that Hegseth was closely monitoring agencies’ progress on the beard policy and other workplace changes: cnn.com/2026/07/10/pol…

@kmk1072 100% That was a point many of us made. L3Harris would normally take around 3 years to retrofit a plane for that security requirement. Even working around the clock, it’s hard to see how this plane was stripped to the metal, rewired, and declared operational so fast.

@Angry_Staffer One AF acquaintance who used to fly on Air Force One said, when the “gift” was delivered, that it would take a few years to make it completely and safely operational as AF One. I believe him over the Algae King.

Trump *says* a lot of things. If he does this, it’s a complete game changer for long term trajectory of the war. Ukraine’s domestic drone, missile, and radar production has proven to be sophisticated — I see no reason they couldn’t spin up PAC-3 missiles relatively quickly.
Saint Javelin@saintjavelin

Trump says the U.S. will give Ukraine a license to manufacture Patriot systems instead of simply supplying more of them. If this actually comes true, it could be one of the most consequential decisions for Ukraine’s long-term air defense since the full-scale invasion began.

@MillardFillmor1 When you hear that 24 month figure, that’s from order to delivery. That’s lead time accounting for other missiles being produced. The US produces roughly 600 a year.

@Angry_Staffer Dude, I would love this too but it still takes more than 24 months to produce one of these missiles. Not sure how quickly Ukraine could get this up and running.

@brokenPrime For full domestic production, for sure. I’m assuming in Ukraine’s case, for the first year or two (minimum) they would still have to import rocket motors and seekers. The missile body is the easy part. Probably 6 months for facility stand-up, tooling, etc.

@Angry_Staffer Not really. Germany was given permission in '24 and they won't have any complete until '28. So it takes about 4 years to get up and running. And Ukraine hasn't received formal permission yet.

@Angry_Staffer I'm confident that the Marines can take it, with high levels of casualties. Problem is, they'll be sitting ducks for Iranian drone attacks long term, and they'll also need to secure the oil fields inland, which will require a protracted military operation which may not succeed.
