The Dutch government has announced tougher security measures at the Ter Apel asylum registration center after weeks of escalating violence, including two recent stabbings, repeated fights, and unrest that forced the Red Cross and VluchtelingenWerk (Dutch Council for Refugees) to temporarily suspend operations over safety concerns. Dutch Asylum Minister Bart van den Brink has designated the area a security risk zone, allowing police to carry out preventive searches. Authorities are also installing extra surveillance cameras, deploying four additional security guards and two extra enforcement officers, and opening a supervised day shelter with strict rules. Asylum seekers who cause violence or serious nuisance can be removed from the shelter and face criminal prosecution. Tensions remained high even after the announcement, with fresh fights breaking out and some asylum seekers shouting slogans including "The Netherlands is shit, Morocco is great!" and accusing Dutch people of racism.
