Buying opportunity? History suggests oil shocks and Nifty flatline returns of 17 months are buying opportunties. As per a Kobeissi note, over the last 40 years, the S&P 500's 12-month return following a 2-day oil spike of +20% has been +24%. This note comes on the back of data that in each instance when the Nifty has given flat returns for 17 months, the subsequent 12 months have been positive with minimum double digit returns except for 2/14 instances, when it was single digit. The Kobeissi post points out something similar for US markets, saying that in 6 out of 7 instances since 1986, the S&P 500 has been higher 1 year after such an oil spike.
