Second Statement: I am outraged by the blatant lies told to the public yesterday by the Uganda Prison Service spokesperson, Frank Baine, who claimed that Dr @kizzabesigye1 was not ill and that he had merely gone to a clinic for a routine medical check-up. Today, the same Prison Service informed the court that Dr Besigye could not appear because he is ill, forcing the hearing to be postponed to 24 February. This contradiction exposes a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and conceal the truth about his deteriorating health. I have just returned from Luzira Prison, where after more than two hours of haggling with the prison commander, I was finally allowed to see Dr Besigye. I found him huddled in a dirty plastic chair in a small room near his cell. He is extremely weak. His symptoms have not improved. The prison doctor confirmed to me that Dr Besigye’s personal doctor had reported test results showing that the infection is worsening, not improving. Dr Besigye told me he is finding it difficult to walk and is experiencing significant pain in his legs. He is still unable to eat solid food and, in the past eight hours, had consumed only soup, an egg, and a slice of bread. Despite his condition, prison authorities are refusing to transfer him to a fully equipped hospital where his personal doctor can properly monitor and treat him. Instead, they proposed admitting him to Murchison Bay Prison Hospital, a facility notorious for neglect and preventable deaths, and where the army would have full control over his treatment. Dr Besigye has flatly refused this. He will not place his life in the hands of President Museveni and his personal army. He insists - reasonably and lawfully - on being treated at a private hospital where his doctor works, under prison guard if required. I am deeply disturbed that a man who fell ill five days ago, whose condition is worsening, is still being held in a tiny, extremely hot cell and denied access to adequate medical care. This is cruel, dangerous, and unlawful. The Officer-in-Charge of Luzira Prison and the NRM government must explain: ➡️ why Dr Besigye is being denied proper medical treatment, ➡️ the Prison Service lied to the public about his condition, and ➡️ a gravely ill detainee is being treated with such inhumanity. I demand that Dr Kizza Besigye be released immediately and allowed to return home to be cared for by his family and doctors. I also demand that the trumped-up charges against him be dropped. His life is in danger. The responsibility will lie squarely with those who continue to deny him care. Winnie Byanyima Spouse of Dr Kizza Besigye 21 January 2026
Winnie Byanyima@Winnie_Byanyima

Personal statement: I wish to express my deep concern and profound frustration regarding the health, safety, and continued detention of my spouse, Dr Kizza Besigye, who has now been held in prison for over one year on trumped-up charges of treason. Dr Besigye is seriously ill and has been denied timely and adequate medical care. Last night, after a sharp deterioration in his condition, he was rushed to the clinic of his personal doctor, where he was treated and then returned to prison late at night. The prison authorities did not inform me of his worsening condition. I learned of it through other means and rushed to the clinic myself during the night. When I saw him, Dr Besigye was extremely weak, shaking, running a high temperature, and suffering from severe abdominal pain. At the clinic, Dr Besigye was guarded by six prison officers and a plainclothes military intelligence officer, a woman who concealed her face with a large white shawl. When he was discharged, Dr Besigye was marched to a basement car park and bundled into a prison pickup truck, squashed between two warders. When I approached the military officer to ask for her identity, she ran away. I managed to take a photograph of her as she fled. I am deeply concerned that Dr Besigye is now effectively in the hands of the army, rather than under civilian prison authority, and that his medical care is being deliberately restricted. I have been kept in the dark about his condition, warned not to inform the public about his illness, and threatened that if I did so, he would be denied further access to his doctor’s clinic. I regard this as blackmail and as a deliberate attempt to deny him medical care and conceal his condition from public knowledge. This morning, despite the clear facts, the prison spokesperson publicly stated that Dr Besigye is not ill. This is false. Following my interview this morning, and statements made by his political party, the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), the Commissioner of Prisons has now denied Dr Besigye access to a fully equipped medical facility, allowing only his personal doctor to see him at the prison sick bay—an ill-equipped facility where many prisoners have lost their lives. Dr Besigye has now been denied bail four times and kept on remand for over a year, as the government has fumbled to fabricate evidence to prosecute him. During this time, he has been held in solitary confinement, barred from speaking to other prisoners, denied the right to worship with other prisoners on Sundays, and prevented from engaging in basic physical activity such as playing football. He is confined to a tiny cell with little sunlight, sleeps on a small mattress infested with bedbugs, and is subjected to conditions that are cruel, degrading, and inhumane. Last week, during the elections, the prison was closed and the internet shut down countrywide. We were unable to visit him, and it is within this period of isolation and deprivation that Dr Besigye has fallen gravely ill. I therefore demand the immediate release of Dr Kizza Besigye, so that his family and doctors can care for him properly. He is innocent, and these dirty political games must stop. His continued detention, mistreatment, and denial of medical care place his life at grave risk, and those responsible will be held accountable. Talk is cheap. What we need is facts. An actual inquiry. If the government really believes Reform is "in bed with Vladimir Putin", why on earth isn't it opening the inquiry the security and intelligence committee have long demanded??

The NHS isn't an ‘ecosystem’ to be divvied up between private interests. The NHS is OUR service & must remain THE NHS providing health care for all. We won't let Alan Milburn, Streeting & this Govt downgrade our NHS to the role of just 1 provider amongst private companies.

Thank you Netanyahu, we'll remember the word 'mishap'. A word useful for such things as a matter of a lost key, or a trip over a doorstep but you've now used to wrap up blood, murder, loss and horror. If this is a mishap the mishap is you.
