Yesterday's pilgrimage in search of St Birinus at Dorchester Abbey, Dorchester-on-Thames (Oxon). 😇 The 'Apostle of Wessex' (d.650) was originally buried here in Dorchester, but in c690 his relics were taken to Winchester. In 1224 Dorchester reclaimed the relics and Birinus consequently had two shrines! (More to follow.)

I am intrigued by the kinds of materials used to create molds to cast #PilgrimBadges including cuttlefish bone. C15 St James w his pilgrim hat, staff, and scallop shell. Salisbury Museum. Crowned Ms (for Virgin Mary). The bon was easy to carve.

Today is the Feast of St. Victor of Marseille. Roman Soldier and Martyr, he was crushed by a millstone and beheaded for refusing to offer incense to Jupiter. His tomb later became a major pilgrimage site, over which the famous Abbaye Saint-Victor in Marseille was built.

Today was the traditional feast of St Uncumber, a folkloric Portugese noblewoman who sprouted a beard to fend off suitors and was crucified by her father. She appears on the c1500 screen at Worstead, Norfolk, a bearded woman on a cross. 1/2 Worstead: norfolkchurches.co.uk/worstead/worst…

'People's Chapel', Dorchester Abbey. Constructed c1340 for use as a parish church. Wall paintings from the same period. It's been suggested that this chapel functioned as an 'antechamber' for pilgrims before they visited the shrine.
