My article, "Journey or Destination? Rethinking Pilgrimage in the Western Tradition" is now online (Open Access). Delighted it has been chosen for the front cover of the @Religions_MDPI Special Issue, "Pilgrimage and Religious Mobilization in the World"! mdpi.com/2077-1444/14/9…

Trying to channel St Cuthbert on his feast day as I prepare a talk on his medieval cult and pilgrimage for an event in London tomorrow! 😇

A warm welcome today from pupils at Rochester Riverside C of E Primary School as our pilgrimage reached Rochester.  We met lots of fascinating people along the way, and Evensong at @RochesterCathed .  Pilgrimage is as much about the people we meet as the miles we walk.

Today is the feast day of our Patron Saint, St Cuthbert. Durham Cathedral exists as the final resting place of one of the North’s greatest saints: the man who lived a humble and prayerful life and who inspired many to follow in the footsteps of Christ.

One of the many Anglo-Saxon carvings at Breedon Priory Church, Breedon on the Hill, Leicestershire. This one has been interpreted as a woman making a sign of blessing. 📸2024

This is excellent news for St Albans. Andrew Rumsey is not only a deeply pastoral bishop and a man with 18 years of parish experience but has written one of the best and most theologically rich books on parish and place. gov.uk/government/new…

Day two of the pilgrimage. Reflection at Lesnes Abbey, Morning Prayer at St John the Baptist in Erith, and a lovely visit with pupils at Holy Trinity C of E Primary School. Pilgrimage teaches us to keep walking - step by step - sustained by prayer and community.

19 Mar 1469: William Selling, Prior of Christ Church #Canterbury charges a Lollard #otd who was opposed to the cult of St. Thomas Becket of #Canterbury (Pilgrim badges: BM/Met Museum) Neither could have predicted the shrine's destruction 69 years hence, in 1538.

@jonmsweeney As in the Middle Ages, pilgrimage can be taken in a day and cost no more than the price of transport to and from the destination.

@AnneEBailey1 My concern is that pilgrimage is - in the 21st century, in contrast to the Middle Ages - is most often something for the wealthy, privileged, no need for employment few.

@AnneEBailey1 Did you know there is a village named after him in Brittany ? Saint Jean Brévelay. In the Xth century Bretons fled the Normand invasion. Returning from England, they brought back relics of St John Beverley and named their parish after him photos-eglises.fr/Bretagne/56/St…
