Thrilled that my book on Ben Ali’s authoritarian regime is finally out! Less thrilled that the topic is again so relevant in today’s Tunisia…

Kenneth M Roberts’ chapter on authoritarianism in South America explains why, despite its achievements during the Third Wave of democratization, South America is not immune to the patterns of democratic backsliding seen across much of the world. academic.oup.com/edited-volume/…

Dan Slater distinguishes modern authoritarianism from earlier forms of nondemocratic rule, tracing the evolution of modern authoritarianism primarily as a response to the historical rise of popular sovereignty and the territorial state. @SlaterPolitics academic.oup.com/edited-volume/…

This book on Ennahda, I reviewed for @openDemocracy, and written when there was still some hope with Tunisia as the last candle of Arab Spring. Under Kais Saeid presidency, and most of Ennahda's leadership under detention, we are talking about very different possible futures.
