As you may know Ruth Perry’s sister, Julia Waters, does not ‘do’ X so, on this election day I bring to you an important message. I’ve been with Julia on practically every step of this journey and can testify to the truth of every word she writes:

In other news: kids who tell their teachers to f*** off all the time ‘tend not to do as well as they could.’ Eye-watering stupid activism from this organisation. Grateful to @SkyNews for allowing me to provide a reality check. So many of these stories rely on one-sided self-reported accounts of the students who disrupt lessons or terrorise their peers. What about the victims of this behaviour?

- Unhappiest kids in Europe - Fewer children than ever reading for pleasure - School buildings crumbling - less than half the target of teacher trainees - Biggest retention crisis - Morale in the profession the lowest ever - Ofsted… The list goes on. They’re delusional
Gillian Keegan@GillianKeegan

📈 89% of schools are rated good or outstanding, up from 68% under Labour. 📚 Our primary school children are now the best readers in the western world. ⬆️ Our secondary school children have risen from 27th to 11th in maths & 25th to 13th in reading. Well said @RishiSunak 👏

I’m not sure why there isn’t high profile coverage of this poor teacher who was stabbed by a group of students, some in uniform, just outside his school. Thankfully he’s going to survive. But isn’t this the kind of thing that should be of genuine outrage? standard.co.uk/news/crime/tea…

3 steps* I think would make a huge difference to quality of life and retention in Secondaries. 1. Release some pressure on GCSEs and grades. 2. End data culture. 3. Encourage subjects to be subjects. (*not a complete or perfect solution but it would go a long way) 1/

Poor school attendance is the biggest problem facing Britain today, in terms of its long-run impact. It's good that everyone's talking about it this morning, but I'm not convinced we've got the right solutions. (A bit of a 🧵)

There are schools and teachers up and down the UK stepping in to do incredible things like this to tackle poverty. Very simply: they shouldn’t have to.

OFSTED’s evidence is characterized by repeated use of the same organisationally popular phrases, idioms, and language. I would put money down on HMI Alan Derry having been heavily coached over night as there was a marked change in his responses to questions today…

Ruth Perry Inquest Day One The first day of witness evidence has produced some devastating testimony. I will do my best to give you a sense of the day. Apologies for the length of this thread. There is a lot to get through and honestly, too much for this platform…

Ruth Perry Inquest Day 2 Today has already been so much harder. Quote of the day from OI Gareth Evans; during inspections "we more often see people crying than not", so somebody upset is just par for the course, in an OFSTED inspection, apparently. More later...

🧵 My latest placard design, printed and ready for the NI teachers’ strike tomorrow. I love my job, and I’m proud of what I do, but I’m disgusted with our lack of government and their complete disregard for teachers in this country. 1/4

I have had a talk with Julia Waters, Ruth Perry's sister, this afternoon. Julia isn’t on X so isn’t in a position to put out a comment, but her thoughts on Amanda Spielman’s Radio4 interview with Emma Barnett are important and I am grateful that she has allowed me to share them…

Every time I see the stark figures of the pay disparity between teachers in NI & the rest of the UK my blood boils a little bit more. This isn't teachers versus schools. This is teachers in NI wanting equal pay. 24k starting salary? It's laughable. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northe…

Gill, babes, last year four of the classes in my dept only had a qualified teacher for three months. A teacher left last week and we can’t replace them. My A Level physics students have no teacher. Us striking is not the problem. 8 days is not the problem.
Gillian Keegan@GillianKeegan

Last year, school strikes resulted in 25 million school days being lost cumulatively. Children should not have to suffer a repeat of this disruption. I’m announcing that we will introduce minimum service levels in schools so that pupils get the education they need and deserve.
