Court Stops INEC’s “Illegal Timetable” : Rule of Law Has Prevailed
Today’s judgement by the Federal High Court in Abuja is a major victory for constitutional democracy, the rule of law and the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.
For weeks, many Nigerians watched with concern as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) attempted to impose a hurried and restrictive timetable on political parties ahead of the 2027 elections ,a move widely viewed as inconsistent with the Electoral Act, 2026.
While many kept silent, a few courageous voices spoke out. Among them,I consistently warned that no institution, no matter how powerful, is above the law.
In a landmark decision delivered by Hon. Justice M. G. Umar in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/517/2026 between the Youth Party and INEC, the court reportedly held that INEC lacked the statutory authority to impose restrictive timelines for party primaries and other pre-election activities outside the provisions of the Electoral Act.
The court further ruled that INEC cannot abridge statutory timelines relating to submission of candidates’ particulars, withdrawal and substitution of candidates, publication of final lists and campaign periods.
The ruling was a vindication of the position I and other concerned Nigerians had maintained over the past two months.
I have consistently argued that INEC must act within the confines of the Electoral Act. Unfortunately, those warnings were ignored. This judgement has now vindicated that position.
I praiseJustice M.G. Umar for a courageous and principled judgement that reaffirmed constitutional order and restored public confidence in democratic institutions.
This decision is not just about election dates or political parties. It is about protecting democracy from arbitrariness and ensuring that institutions operate strictly within the limits of the law.
Nigeria’s democracy grows stronger when the rule of law prevails over administrative convenience.

The difference between the Bybit Card and traditional bank cards becomes obvious the moment you actually use both.
Traditional cards were built for fiat.
The Bybit Card was built for the future.

Whether we like to admit it or not, there’s a growing competency gap in a large part of our employable workforce today. Most of my businesses function heavily with the help of AI, yet I feel this gap too.
The issue isn’t just unemployment anymore, or lower salaries, it’s also preparedness, adaptability, and depth of skill.
Degrees are increasing. Real-world capability? I cannot say it’s at the same pace.
We need to start having more honest conversations about competence, not just employment.

REMINISCENCE: THE PRICE OF OUR DEMOCRACY
Nigeria’s democracy did not come easy. It was earned through sacrifice, through incarceration, tears, blood, and, for many, the ultimate price.
Recently, two powerful reminders of that era came my way.
The first is a December 1989 publication by the International Union of Students (IUS), which highlighted a global campaign demanding my release, alongside that of South Korean student leader Rim Suyong. Interestingly, in the absence of a proper photograph, the publishers resorted to using an illustrative image to represent me.
The second is even more personal, a handmade poster calling for the release of myself and my colleague, Gbenga Komolafe, who later joined me in detention.
These artifacts speak to a defining moment in history, an era of strong international solidarity. Our generation stood at the forefront of a global pro-democracy movement that swept across Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia in the late 1980s.
As we reflect on our democratic journey today, it is important to remember that the freedoms we now enjoy were hard-won. They were secured by individuals and movements that refused to be silenced, even in the face of repression.
The responsibility to protect and deepen this democracy now rests with all of us.

In an open letter to the President, Hashim expressed concern that the current electoral timetable appears to be compressing the window for party primaries, warning that such a development could weaken internal democracy and undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections. #fyi #viral #fyp
